"It's almost done!" I exclaim, the last part of the houses roof being placed together.
"It's done!" Said Abner. "Now what?"
I thought for a moment thinking about the words he just filled my head with, "now what?" I had nothing to do beyond this house. Maybe fix up the barn, make a garden, kill some animals. But then the idea came up to me that we need furniture for the new house.
The jingle jangle in my pocket gave me the idea that besides that day I bought a gun, I got money from the bear hide. Maybe I'll just go down to the store and buy some tools.
"Is the store the place where you were trying to get a job?" Abner asked.
"It's in the same general area. The employment office is across the street from the store. I advise you though, not to go to the employment office, they will tell you know faster than I can blink." I say, Abner with a puzzled face. I think he was wondering why they would say no in a blink of an eye.
"Jon, lets go then. We can't get anything done if we are sitting here Lollygagging." Said Abner wiping the sweat off his face.
The sun was boiling down on the land. Abner and I traveled over yonder to the store on the donkey. I went to the store to buy tools while Abner did something outside.
Meanwhile Abner instead of doing something outside, he went and walked across the street to the employment office.
"Howdy!" Said Abner opening the door of the office. "My names Abner and was wondering if I could get a job."
Behind the front desk, someone turned around to see who was standing before them. Abner looked as they turned realizing that it wasn't some country man, but a woman.
"Well Howdy there sugar!" She exclaimed enthusiastically. She had a sweet southern accent. "I'm Maybelle!"
She was the prettiest thing he had ever saw, she was wearing overalls, with boots, and a flannel shirt, with a big belt bucket. Her two brown braids fell down the sides of her shoulders, with her cowgirl hat covering her head.
"H-Howdy." Abner said shyly. "I was looking for a job..."
"Oh well I got the perfect job for you, you can help me. I'm a little damsel in distress and I need a strong man. And your mighty fine." Said Maybelle flattering Abner. He didn't know what to say, was she coming on strong?
"Well, you're pretty beautiful yourself!" Abner started flirting. "Well let me make you a deal, we will be promised okay and in a couple of months we will be conjoined together as one."
Without hesitation, Maybelle went up around the desk and kissed Abner right on the lips.
"I'll see you soon." She said, blowing him a kiss. Abner put his elbows on the desk and leaned watching Maybelle as she began to work. The very exact time was interrupted by Jon who came in, in a rush looking for his friend.
"Hey Abner! Come on!" I say, walking up to Abner and shaking him. I got him up and walked him towards the door.
