Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines. It extends from the Cagayan province in northern Luzon until the Quezon Province in southern Luzon. There are eight provinces surrounding the Sierra Madre, namely, Cagayan, Aurora, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Viscaya, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, and Rizal. The mountain range was teeming with wild life, until the latter part of the 20th century when almost 75% of its hardwood was cut for commercial purposes. Today, neither flora nor fauna of significant value can be found on the mountain range.

Somewhere, in what remains of the once vast forest of the mountain range, at mid-afternoon a loud plaintive cry of "chick-weeeeee" is heard before a Lawin perches on a tall Lawaan tree. The ilongot natives, working for a logging company nearby, could not explain why the majestic Brahminy Kite hawk regularly flies back to the vicinity and does not migrate elsewhere.
