Ben stared at his ringing phone that had been sitting on the table next to his bed, while he lay in bed. He had gotten back from Devi's party a couple of hours ago, and he was feeling exhausted after having to bear Devi's mother's tough ways and controlling presence. But he only went to reach for it in case it had been Devi. When he looked at it and it was an unknown number, he groaned and put it aside, and turned to go back to bed. But then it rang again, and now Ben felt confused. He grabbed it again, and it was still the same unknown number so he just stared at it. It finished ringing, but before he could place it back on the bedside table, it rang again but this time it was Devi's number. He felt more awake now and picked up instantly.
"Hi Devi. Wha-" he said before being interrupted.
"It's not Devi. It is her mother."
It had truly been her mother over the phone with a slight edge to her voice, but still stern. Ben was shocked and beyond confused at this point.
"Benjiman, I know Devi is there, let me talk to her right this instant." She said sternly, but with a worried tone to it. Ben frowned with confusion.
"Wait. What? Devi is not he- wait is she alright?" He questioned her urgently.
"Do not fool me Ben. Let me talk to her." She demanded.
"No. I am serious. She is not here. Why would she be here? What happened?" He asked her, sounding uneased and starting to feel tense.
"Devi and I had a disagreement. And..." She paused. "And she has run off somewhere. I... I saw her jump on her bicycle and ride off. I thought she might be with you." She explained, Ben hearing the sadness in her voice. Ben started to feeling himself going anxious, and jumped out of his bed. He wasn't sure what to do first, then grabbed some of his nearest clothes and started to get changed into them.
"Don't worry Mrs. Vishkumar. I'll find her. I'll drive around until I do." He replied to her confidently. Then he heard muffle on the other side, like she had been crying.
"Ok. Thank you Benjiman." She replied, her voice much more gentler now. Then she cleared her throat to stop the tears from making her sound less tough. "I think if anyone can find her it would most likely be you."
"Ok, well I'll call when I have found her." He said quickly, and then hung up. He rushed to finish changing his clothes, slid on his shoes, and then grabbed his keys, heading straight for the car. He got in, reversed his car and started driving into the night to search for Devi. It had been almost half an hour he had driven when he finally came across something that might have been Devi sitting in a park, and as he got closer he realised it looked like it was her, sitting on a swing, hunched and looking down. He quickly parked the car, over the curb, and then jumped out and rushed over.
"Devi! God, I finally found you. Are you ok? I was so worried. Why are you out here?" He asked desparately, slight frustration out of worry in his voice. Then before he reached her, she had turned around to look at him and he could see she had been crying, and she started breaking into tears again. It took him off guard and he looked at her shocked. He ran over to her and grabbed her, and then held her tightly in his arms, and she continued to sob into his shoulder. He held her tightly to him, and then kissed her forehead.
"It's ok. Your ok. I'm here. You can talk to me." He said to her gently. She just continued to cry. And he continued to hold her.
"God, what happened Devi?" He asked. She wiped away some of her tears.
"My mum. You know. She's unbelievably controlling. We got into another fight." She replied, feeling her voice breaking, between trying to catch her breath from all her tears.
"You should have come to me. Why wouldn't you come to me? It's dark and dangerous out here." He asked exasperated and confused. She paused and looked up at him, her eyes still welled with tears.
"Because it would be another excuse for my mum to blame things on you too." She replied. He just stared at her stunned that she cared so much for him too. He felt himself dissapear into her eyes, sparkling at him. He just wanted to keep her safe. It felt so good to hold her so tightly to him, feeling her as she breathed heavily from all her crying. He could hold her here in this moment for ever, knowing she was safe. Then he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket and then began to ring. He picked it up with one hand, still holding Devi in the other. He glanced at the phone, then back at Devi.
"It's your mum." He said. She just frowned, not wanting him to make her talk to her. He frowned reading Devi, not sure if he should pick up or not, but eventual decided to.
"Hi." He said.
"Benjiman. Have you found Devi?" She questioned, some anxiety in her voice.
"Ahh, yeah, she's here with me." He replied, picking up on her worry. "She's ok."
Devi's mother breathed out a sigh of relief.
"Ok. Thank you Benjiman." She said, feeling her voice more gentle with him this time. Then she paused for a short while as she thought. "If you bring her home right away ... I will... i will let you both date."
When Ben heard her say this he didn't know if he believed it at first, but then it started to sink in slowly. "I can see how much you care for her. And that means alot." She explained. Ben's mind was blown. He didn't know how to react, but he felt an uncontrollable grin come across his face and he rubbed his head confused. Devi looked at Ben confused why he looked so happy. He just grinned at her still with the phone to his ears.
"Ummm. Yes. I'll be there soon." He replied, and Devi frowned at him.
"Thank you Benjiman. Thank you for finding her and keeping her safe." She said sincerely. He felt himself radiating with energy that made him feel incredible.
"Yeah... aaah no problem. Ok. Bye." He said, and as he hung up he stepped away from Devi and looked at her with elated eyes. She just did a confused chuckle looking at him, thinking he looked slightly silly.
"Ummm. Ok?" She gave him a quizzical look. He just stepped closer again, smiling at her and then holding her close.
"Seems like your mum may have changed her mind about us dating." He said grinning at her. Her eyes widened with suprised. She didn't know what to do, and then as she looked into his smiling eyes, she found herself drawn to his lips and kissed him. Then they stood there under the moon light for a while while they shared their moment of pure bliss, blissfully kissing. After a short while, they hopped into Ben's car and he drove her back home, both beaming with excitement and love for each other.
