Devi and Ben both reached Devi's house, and saw her mother was just arriving home from work and parking the car into the garage. Ben turned to look at Devi, smiling at her.
"I better go." He said to her, thinking he didn't want to get Devi into trouble. But before he left Devi's mother had gotten out of the car and stood there looking over toward them.
"Devi. I thought you said you were going to work with Rebecca?" She yelled from the car. Devi turned to look her way.
"Yeah. I was just there. Ben walked me home." Devi explained in a defensive tone. Devi's mother nodded her head, pausing for a little while.
"Well in that case does Ben want to stay for dinner?" She asked, still in an unsure tone. "Since he walked you safely here, that is." His eyebrows rose from how shocked he was, and both he and Devi were very much confused.
"Aaah... Yeah definitely." He replied, still confused, but his confusion turned into a grin when he looked at Devi. He didnt know how Devi's mother had come to this decision but either way he was thrilled, and yet some what nervous. Devi was equally confused, and her stunned look did not change.
"Ok. I did not see that coming." She whispered to Ben as they walked over to the front door together. Ben saw Devi's mother taking some bags out of the car and rushed over to help.
"Can I help you with those?" He asked.
"Thank you Ben." She said, forcing a smile, which Devi could tell she was trying very hard to except this predicament her mother perceived it to be. It didnt deter Ben's enthusiasm and he smiled back cheerfully. Maybe if he tried hard he could leave a good impression on Devi's mother and she would be more willing to let them date more freely, he thought to himself. Besides, he had loved and enjoyed the last time he had been over for dinner at their home, and he wouldn't be going to his empty and lonely house, but would be able to be with Devi tonight, close to her.
"Where can I put these for you Mrs. Vishwakumar?" He asked cheerfully. Her facial expression still looked serious and had not changed.
"The kitchen will be fine. Devi help Ben find somewhere to put down those bags. They are for the fridge." She said to Devi, looking at her firmly. She never flinched from looking so strict. Yep, Devi thought, she was trying very hard to keep her emotions bunkered down. And she realised that her mother was doing it for her. It had made Devi smile a heartwarming smile at that thought.
"Yeah sure mum." She replied. Ben followed Devi into the kitchen, where Kamala had already had started on dinner. She had been chopping up some onions and started tearing up.
"Hey Kamala, are you ok?" Devi asked as her and Ben placed the bags on the counter. Kamala tried smiling back, rubbing her eyes.
"Yes, just the onions you know." She replied, her eyes looking very red. Then she had realised Ben was in the room. "Oh, Ben is here. Does your mother know?"
"I do. I asked him if he would like to stay for dinner." Devi's mother replied, having just walked into the room, putting down her bag and keys on the dinning table. Kamala felt slightly awkward, not knowing her mother had heard. "He walked Devi home from Rebecca's, so I thought he might like to stay." This kept surprising Devi still when she had said it again.
"Are you making tacos again Kamala?" Devi's mother questioned walking over, and scooped a taste of the minced meat cooking in the saucepan on the stove.
"Yes aunty. I thought you liked taco night?" Kamala replied. Devi's mother just gave her a big bright smile.
"Ok. I can't wait." She replied. "Ill just go put some of my things away, and I'll come back down. Remember not to put to much chilli, ok? Ben may pass out." Devi and Kamala looked at Ben and chuckled. Ben cracked a guilty smile and shrugged. Devi's mother grabbed her handbag and left the room, then went upstairs to put away her things. Ben looked over at Kamala.
"What can I do?" He asked, rubbing his hands in front of him preparing for him to help out. Devi cracked a smile, noticing how much he was trying.
"Well, you and Devi, could chop up some of these vegetables. I will give you the chillis Ben, and Devi you can do the capsicum. I will need to wash my eyes out, they are still stinging. I'll be back." And with that Kamala rushed over to another sink in the laundry area. Ben looked at Devi concerned when he saw the chillis.
"I thought she said not much chilli. This is a heck load of chilli." He said, shocked. "Am I going to die tonight?" Devi just giggled. Then he said with utter shock. "So this is your mother's plan! This is how she'll murder me." He said cheekily, joking around. Devi laughed.
After a while they had finished making dinner, and were all sitting at the dinning table. Ben had grabbed the seat next to Devi, and waited first for everyone to grab a taco before he grabbed his. He tried avoiding the meat knowing how much chilli was added to it.
"Thank you all for this delicious food you have prepared. It looks absolutely good and delicious." Devi's mother said with a satisfied smile, taking a sip of her lemonade. They all returned the smile. Then Devi's mother turned her attention to Ben. "Ben it is different now you are dating my Devi. Before you were her friend and it was much easier that way. But I know that has changed, and it is only normal for me to be more curious about you and your intentions with her. Besides I don't want her coming home one day crying that she is pregnant and can not go to college and achieve her dreams." Ben almost coughed up his lemonade, feeling himself go red a little, thinking that it went heavy at the dinner table so quickly. He was left speechless. Devi's eyes widened and now she looked concerned.
"That won't happen I swear." He said as soon as his breath came back to him. "That is not my intention for sure."
Devi's mother frowned looking at them both.
"It may not be your intention right now, but you are both teenagers with crazy surging hormones and stupid immature and irrational brains that think about nothing other than sex. One minute you say so, then the next you are on top of each other." Ben glanced at Devi looking worried, and they both looked red with embarrassment. Kamala was beyond awkward at the table. "And I am not going into the conversation about using protection because hell I hope and pray it never ever gets to that."
"Mum!" Devi exclaimed. "Can you stop. You dont need to worry about Ben."
"He is a boy Devi so therefore I should care, extremely." Devi's mother replied, sternly.
"Ummm. I... I wouldn't do that to Devi." He said, hoping deep down that Devi's mother would believe him. Devi's mother squinted his way, trying to read him. Then she looked away, picked up her taco and took a small bite.
"You Ben, are one of the only boys I would actually be happy for Devi to date, you know that?" She asked, looking his way. Ben brightened up a little bit, but he wasn't sure if it was too early to feel more relaxed yet. But then she looked at the both of them, with a little forced smile. "I am given you both a chance, ok, to date without Kamala's supervision. But do not disappoint me ok?" Ben and Devi breathed out a relieved sigh and smile, and nodded. And after this, Devi's mother let them enjoy dinner a little more without the awkward talk.
