Devi's mother had just parked her car, grabbed her hand bag and got out of her car. While she was searching for her keys in her bag, she looked up for a second to see Ben walking over slowly, hands in his pockets, a worried look over his face. She already watched him displeased, stop and crossed her arms with a questioning look on her face. He stopped a fair distance away from her on the foot path, feeling uneased, always having found her terrifying to confront. But his only confidence came from the thought of why he was there for.
"Benjiman. May I help you? I hope Devi has had a certain talk with you by now?" She said, sternly. Ben rubbed his arm nervously.
"Yeah. She has." He replied. "That's actually why I'm here."
Devi's mother rolled her eyes in frustration, then began to walk to the front door.
"There is nothing to be said. Devi is not to see you. You better be off now. I have made my mind." She replied pulling out her keys. He just felt irritated and frowned at her. He gather up his courage.
"But maybe I do." He got out. She just did a small laugh.
"No you do not Benjiman. Devi needs to focus on herself right now." She replied, trying to open the door.
"Mrs. Vishkumar. I really like Devi... I think I more than like her-" he said, before being interrupted by her.
"Benjiman, you both are very irresponsible. You both knew the conditions. That was broken and now I have nothing else to say. I wish you the best." She said finally getting the door open. Ben panicked, and walked up closer, holding up his hand to indicate her not to close the door.
"Wait!" He uttered. He was suprised she actually did stop. She just watched him with a confused frown. "Whether Devi goes back to India or if she stays here... she will be miserable. If you dont want to see her so broken everyday... we could all work out something. She deserves that." He replied wanting her so desparately to hear him. She didnt say anything. He knew he needed to continue before she would change whatever was stopping her from changing her mind. "I hate seeing Devi broken and I know you do too, so i will do anything. Anything you think could help." Devi's mothers expression only slightly looked a little softer. She paused for a moment studying Ben, and then looked around to clarify her mind and think. She looked back at Ben. He looked exasperated as he waited.
"You care for her don't you Benjiman." She said with suprised wonder. He just looked at her suprised too.
"Yes of course I do." He said more gently this time. Then he watched her, looking hurt. "Please Mrs. Vishwakumar. Please let me date your daughter." She looked at him considering, and thinking for a moment. Then he walked up closer."I... I don't want to watch Devi get hurt any more. I mean... I know Ive hurt her. Alot." He says with guilt, then swallows, feeling the guilt pool in his stomach. He casts his eyes away, and takes a moment to take breath. Ben knows his not always been so good to Devi in the past, and its hard for him to think about how much he himself has hurt her before. "Alot in the past. And I... I didnt realise how unfair that was. How I had treated her." This time he lifts his gaze to meet hers, because his determined that she see he were serious. "I... I didnt realise though how much we... we needed each other too. And this time... maybe I want to be the one to make her happy." Although this took her by suprise, which Ben could clearly tell, she still remained stern. But then he continued, and it was what he said next that made her think alittle more. "Im not the only one who knows what it feels like when we hurt Devi. You... you know it too. She ran from you. She even... loss use of her own legs... when she were hurt so... bad. When her own dad... Mr Vishwakumar... had... passed." He says softly, watching her sadly. "She can be happy. And your the one who can change that. For her."
Devi's mother stood there stunned. She didnt say anything for a short while, still watching Ben in suprise. Because maybe his words actually struck her. It hit her. Painfully so. Standing there, her eyes darted away as she thought. Drifted away in her thoughts, memories of Mohan swirling in her mind, and of what Ben had said, she must have been standing there for a few minutes before she shifts her eyes back on Ben. His standing waiting, waiting on her response. Then she stood up straight and looked at him seriously, not flinching.
"Benjiman. I will have a think about it." She replies and then closes the door. Ben couldn't believe what he had heard. It were as though her words didnt want to sink in. And suddenly, it were as if the world had suddenly stopped. His eyes widened, and he could feel his body fill up with a sudden rush of energy. He bobbed his feet up and down in excitement. It had been only some progress he made with Devi's mum, who happened to be one of the most terrifying people he had had to ever confront, but, what had actually really happened... Her answer meant more then he could have imagined. It were thrilling. Thrilling to know he had something exciting to tell Devi finally. Something he knew would make her... happy. So he jumped into his car and automatically grabbed out his phone to call her instantly. And when she picked up, he had told her everything. He could sense her excitement over the phone, and his heart beated full blown for the way she sounded so cheerful. Her voice was bliss. They talked for a long while, longing for each others company over the phone.
