The last two weeks of summer; the most fun weeks of the summer usually. Circumstances right now were on thin ice, as Harry lost his father, and blamed Spiderman, who was actually his bestfriend Peter Parker. We didn't want to give up though, Green Goblin was gone and that meant we were free. We wanted to celebrate with our closest friends, our family.
"Do you really think these go together?" Olivia questioned as she rummaged through her suitcase. We were all getting ready for our small trip to Gwen's summer house, the highlight of every summer.
"It looks better than Mj's tankini from grade 5." Gwen chuckled, nudging me with her shoulder.
"Atleast I didn't write a love letter to that guy who works at the icecream shop on the boardwalk." We all had many memories of the place, mostly just the 3 of us. The boys didn't join in on going until this year, we got to show them around.
"Anyways, so Gwen, we finally get to meet your mystery guy?" Olivia said changing the subject, she didn't like to look back on that summer very much.
"Yeah, he's meeting us there though, he's not driving with us. He's working I think."
"Well that means more room in the car, so we can play car games." Olivia smiled, Gwen and I shaking our heads no and laughing.
We finished up our packing, and heard the doorbell rang. We opened it up to see the guys, all on time suprisingly.
We all hit the road, Harry being a year older than us, had his license and drove us all so the rest of Gwen's family could drive separately. Olivia sat in the front with Harry, putting her in charge of the music. Peter and I sat behind them, Gwen and Ned being in the very back. It was the first time everyone was together, and having a good time. It felt nice to feel normal, normal teenagers on a normal summer trip together. No Green Goblin, no Spiderman, no Daily bugle, just us kids. Laughing, screaming song lyrics, holding each other's hands, enjoying each other's company.
"Who wants to stand up?" Harry randomly asked, looking back at us.
"Stand up? What does that mean." I questioned, looking at him confused.
Harry didn't say anything, as he just grinned and opened the sun roof, looking back at us.
"Isn't that kind of dangerous? What if we get pulled over,"
Before I could finished that sentence, Peter grabbed my hand and stood us up. I gasped as the fresh air hit my face fast, my hair lapping around in the wind. My gasp turned into laughing though, as Peter lifted our hands up, like we were on a rollercoaster, while he still held mine. I was nervous at first, but then it felt great. All my worries flew away with the wind blowing behind us, happiness blowing in the front of us.
For the first time I felt so in the moment, and not worrying about the past or the future. Right then, I wished that moment would last forever. The sad thing is, the world that we have put ourselves into, that will always be impossible. We arrived to the house after driving for a few hours, I took a look at the beach as I stepped out of the car, breathing in the fresh water air.
"Wow, this place really is nice!" Ned exclaimed, causing us all to smile and laugh, and agree.
"Hey Mj, if you want, I can carry your bag in." Peter asked, with a shy look.
"I appreciate that, but I'm good. You should worry about getting your own in." I looked down at Peter's bag, which he was just kicking it forward, holding his backpack which I was guessing had his suit in it.
"Eddie says he'll be here in a minute or so, he's just pulling into the neighborhood." Gwen said, sounding nervous but also excited.
Eddie, where have I heard that name before?
My thoughts were interrupted as we all heard a knock at the door, Gwen rushing to the door to answer. We all were silent as we waited to see his face, holding our breathes.
And that's when I realized where I knew the name from
Eddie Brock, Peter's rival at the Daily Bugle was Gwen's mystery boyfriend.
"Peter Parker? Is that you?" Eddie looked up from hugging Gwen, with a surprised look on his face, seeming as shocked as Peter and I.
"And you're the girl he was with." He paused to look at me, tilting his head before looking back at Gwen. "Why didn't you tell you were friends with them?"
"I didn't know you guys knew eachother." Gwen looked at me confused too. The room was silent before Eddie spoke up again.
"I know these guys from my job at the Daily Bugle," It was hard not to roll my eyes right there, very hard, "I met them the other day, it's nice to see you again."
Peter just awkwardly smiled and wave, I just smiled back.
"Is it dinner time? I'm starving." Harry broke the awkward stance by walking into the kitchen, the rest of us following."So basically, Mr. Jameson wants one of us to catch Spiderman as being a menace. I haven't gotten anything yet, what about you there Pete?" Eddie was telling everyone about his and Peters competition, while we ate a dinner of grilled hotdogs and cut up fruit.
"Nope, nothing yet." Peter said, not really looking up from his food. I could tell how irritated he was, but he was doing a good job for not letting it show.
"Yeah, it'll be pretty hard for Peter." Harry said randomly, speaking up for the first time since we all sat down.
"Why would it be hard for Peter, Harry?"
"Because he's Spider-man's biggest fanboy." Harry scoffed, looking at Peter with a mocking gaze. I couldn't tell if what he was saying was meant to be a joke, or taken with resentment.
"Harry," Olivia started, but Harry stopped her.
"What? I'm just saying what's obvious. Whenever we're together he's always trying to get me to like the guy, like he didn't kill my dad."
"I say things like that because I don't think he killed your dad." Peter said simply, trying to get the energy back down.
"Why do you even care? It's not like you're part of our family. It's none of your business." Harry's words cut deep, I could see the life from Peters eyes vanish as he finished that sentence. Harry and Peter had considered eachother brothers since elementary school, that must really hurt.
"Look Harry, I'm not 'spider-man's biggest fanboy.' I say it because I care about you. I'm not Flash Thompson, its not like i have some big fan page for him."
"Hey, don't bring Flash into this." Gwen spoke out loudly, and randomly, catching us all by surprise by the fact she cares so deeply about Flash's name mentioned in a rude remark.
"Whatever." Harry got up and left the table, the rest of us watching him leave, not knowing what to say.
"Maybe we should all turn in for the night." Olivia said, looking down with sadness. We all agreed, and went to our rooms.
"Peter, you should talk to him." I said, as Peter unpacked his bag.
"Why? He probably doesn't want to see me for whatever reason." He didn't look up, which caused me to frown.
"He's obviously hurt about something, what happened may make it worse."
"Yeah, well he hurt me too. I'm not his family? I'm the one who's helped him through everything. He's the one that started the argument, it was unnecessary."
"I know it was, but come on Pete, just try to work it out."
"Why do you care so much?", He said, spinning around to look at me quickly."You weren't apart of it, just leave it between us."
"I care so much, because I care about you guys. Why can't i try and help?"
"Because we don't need you to." He said, his words sharp. He then realized how he sounded, and his face turned to remorse.
I didn't say anything but look at him for a second, before walking out of the room.
