Chapter Forty-One

*~*~*~*

"Everyone's a liar. If you're breathing, you're a liar.

I'm a liar.

No question.

The truth can be dangerous. Lies are easier.

Until they aren't anymore."

"I set up a schedule. Who picks him up in the morning, who takes him between what classes, after school, nightly check-ins." Clay explained as he set his tablet in the middle of the table in the library so all of us could see the color organized chart he'd made. "If we spread it around, it's not that bad. I'll text you the URL. It's password protected."

"There's, like, the insanity of us doing this at all, and then there's the insanity of, 'Oh, my God, you built a website.'" Jess shook her head in disbelief as she took the tablet into her hands. I glanced at it over her shoulder, my brows furrowing as I looked it over.

"I didn't build it per se, it's really just storage space." Clay cleared his throat.

"That's a lot of coordination," Alex commented from his seat on Jess's other side. "My brain injury hurts."

"How long do we have to do this?" Cyrus asked.

"Until he gets better," Justin shrugged.

"So... forever." Jess sighed, almost sounding defeated.

"Not forever," I disagreed, trying to provide some sort of optimism for the group that was clearly lacking in it. "People get better, Jess."

"Yeah, look at Penny." Justin nodded in my direction before seeming to process what he'd just said. A sheepish smile filled his lips as he looked at me. "No offense--"

"It's fine. You're right," I told him. It was the truth-- though I hadn't gone off the deep end and tried to shoot up the school like Tyler had, I had reached my own breaking point.

Twice.

"I guess we get to summer and see how he is," Clay cut in. "And maybe senior year it'll all be fine."

I couldn't even bring myself to fake a smile as I sat next to Zach on one of the benches in the weight room at school. My eyes trained on the photo filling the small screen of Clay's phone in Zach's hand. A photo from the Homecoming game that clearly showed Bryce rushing towards Zach just seconds before he'd tackled him and messed up his knee.
