29. The Point of No Return

Levi's senses were heightened. He could hear every snore from his cellmates, every breath his husband took, and every cough from other cells down the halls. Tonight was the night they would make their escape. But if anything went wrong, they had no chance at freedom. Even death could potentially be knocking on their door.

What would happen if they couldn't make it out? They'd be stuck in the wall until someone found them. Would they be taken immediately to the hole? And his biggest concern was his mind beginning to melt as they escaped.

If they were between the walls and his shadow overtook his anxiety, would he ruin their chances of escape? He couldn't do that to Eren.

Relax

The taps of fingers against his skin made him realize how much tension he had in his shoulders.

We're getting out of here tonight

Eren's reassurance relaxed the raven only slightly. The thought of seeing the shadow in between the walls still made him tense. His husband's arms tightened around him.

"I've got you," he whispered so quietly Levi could barely hear him.

Eren started to move. Raising himself onto his elbows, careful to not make the cot creak, he hesitantly brought a foot to the floor; his leg going over Levi through the process. Before swinging his other leg over he leaned down to press a quick and sweet kiss to Levi's lips.

Eren settled by their shared cot, his eyes trained on the two sleeping forms opposite of them.

We have to be quick

Levi took it as a cue to begin climbing out of bed. His hands were shaking as he removed the sheet from his body. With slow movements, he rolled out of bed, his eyes trained on Reiner and Bertholdt. They didn't budge in their slumber.

Levi squatted next to Eren as he watched him carefully pry the makeshift vent from its place. The hole revealed a dark passage that had his skin crawling. His worst enemy could already be lurking in there.

Eren looked to his husband with reassuring eyes.

You can do this and I'll be by your side

The taps did quell Levi's nerves slightly. He couldn't completely contain the fear that coursed through him but Eren was right. As long as his husband was by his side, Levi would be safe.

When Levi nodded, assuring Eren he was ready, Eren gestured for Levi to crawl through.

I'll be right behind

It was the only thing that assured Levi he wouldn't be alone in the dark for too long.

He pressed his stomach to the ground and began crawling through the hole. He barely crawled through when his shadowy figure appeared in his vision. Levi wanted to scream, but he knew he couldn't. So, he bit his tongue and the inside of his cheeks so hard he could taste blood.

He closed his eyes in order to escape his tormentor and slowly stood on the cracked floor.

Levi could hear a faint shuffling sound behind him, which he prayed was his husband. He stood paralyzed in his fear until warm arms were secured around his waist. He relaxed marginally as he felt light taps against his side.

I'm here

Levi's hand found Eren's and he tapped against his skin.
