Another day of school. Woohoo. Well, at least I get to see Miles. And so far, Rebecca hasn't even noticed him—which is a relief. I get dressed quickly, throw on my school uniform, and head downstairs for breakfast.

"Morning," Rose says cheerfully as I pour myself a bowl of Coco Pops.

"Hi," I reply, grabbing the cereal box.

"How'd you sleep?" she asks, peering at me over the counter.

"Average. You?" I ask, pouring milk into my bowl.

"Alright," she shrugs.

"Where's Kate?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Gone back to work," she says casually.

"Already? Wow, that went fast," I say, spoon in hand.

"Yeah... she missed the kids too much," Rose says, giving a small smile.

"Well, I guess that's a good enough reason," I reply, shrugging.

"Yeah, I guess," she says, nibbling on her toast.

"I better get going," I say, grabbing my bag.

"Yeah, see you when you get home," she says, giving me a quick hug.

"Bye," I reply, running out the door and heading toward school.

Miles, Alice, Lucas (Alice's crush), and I are sitting under a tree, eating lunch and chatting. The sun is warm, the chatter of students filling the quad, when I notice a shadow approaching.

Rebecca. And her little entourage.

"What do you want?" I ask bluntly, trying to keep my voice calm.

"To say hi to the new kid," she says with a fake sweetness.

"Whatever," I shrug, already rolling my eyes.

"Hi! My name's Rebecca. I'm the cheerleading captain, student council leader, and basically the most popular girl in school. These are my friends—Chelsea, Abby, Claire, and Louise," she says, beaming.

I glance at Miles, silently asking him to handle it.

"I'm Miles," he says confidently, wrapping an arm around my shoulder. "And you probably already know my girlfriend, Y/n, and my friends, Alice and Lucas."

"Oh, girlfriend, isn't that... lovely?" she says, her eyes widening in shock.

"Yes, it is indeed. Now scram, or I'll make you do fifty push-ups in soccer," I say, narrowing my eyes.

Rebecca and her friends squeal, running back to their table—though not very fast, in my opinion—and huff in frustration.

"That was hilarious," Lucas says, grinning.

"You seriously need to make her do fifty in soccer, though," Alice adds, laughing.

"I've been thinking about it," I reply, leaning back against Miles.

"How? I mean... isn't that the teachers' job?" Miles asks, raising an eyebrow.

"Y/n's the girls' soccer captain, so when we play, we listen to her," Alice explains.

"You need to teach them a lesson then, Y/n," Miles says, giving me a playful smile.

"I'll think of something," I reply, leaning into him. He kisses the top of my head lightly, wrapping his arms around me. The warmth of him makes my day instantly better.

"YES, Y/n!!!" my team shouts as I score the winning goal.

I sprint toward my teammates, and we all collapse in a joyful group hug.

"That was amazing, Y/n! Well done!" Alice exclaims.

"Oh my gosh, we won because of you!" Isabella adds, beaming.

"Oh please... I was the one who scored first," Rebecca barges in, her voice dripping with fake pride.

"Yeah, well, you scored once, and Y/n scored twenty goals, so..." Alice smirks.

"Guys, please. I'm sure Rebecca's just jealous that Y/n not only scored but is also dating Miles Fairchild," Isabella says with a grin.

"You two are seriously the cutest couple," Alice says, nudging me with her elbow.

"No, they're not," Rebecca mutters, clearly bitter.

"Miles would be way better off with someone else," she continues, glaring at me.

"Oh please. Miles wouldn't last a single second with you. So if you try to take him from me—which you won't—bring it on, bitch. Bring it on," I snap, crossing my arms.

"Girls!!!" Rebecca shouts, and her friends run over to her.

"Let's get out of here," she huffs.

When Rebecca and her posse finally leave, my team erupts into cheers and laughter again, hugging me tight.

"Look! It's Luke!" Alice shouts, pointing across the field.

Luke. Senior. NFL player. Super hot. I've never had a crush on him, but... wow. He's attractive, no doubt about it. We all watch him practice, and then he suddenly looks in my direction. My heart literally skips a beat.

"He's looking at you, Y/n," Alice whispers excitedly.

"Oh, shush," I mutter, pretending to ignore it as we head to the locker rooms to get changed.

I walk out the school gates, hand in hand with Miles, chatting and laughing with Alice at my side.

Then, of course... Rebecca and her friends appear again.

"What do you want now?" Alice asks, clearly annoyed.

"Nothing... oh, hi Miles," Rebecca giggles, batting her eyelashes.

I roll my eyes, and Miles chuckles quietly.

"Bye, Rebecca," he says casually, squeezing my hand as we walk away.

I grit my teeth. I hate Rebecca, and I'll do anything to keep her away from Miles. No one—absolutely no one—is getting between us.
