An impulsive decision along with a sinister idea was enough to create a mess. The mess was big enough to turn the life of the person involved upside down. But an immutable decision was taken that tangled two people in the chaos, one who was not at f...

Nikhil's POV
Looking at the confused and shocked faces of everyone it was quite obvious no one there was aware of this sudden agreement, not even the girl I was marrying. She wasn't herself and even at the time of pheras she looked disturbed, she had no idea what to do. For a moment I thought maybe someone will come and stop the shit I was going through but no one bothered. I had to help her to move during the pheras. With every round of the holy fire, it felt I was signing a contract, a contract of matrimony that didn't seem holy to me.
The pheras were done and I was made to tie the nuptial thread around her neck, the thread that was about to bind together. This was the first time she looked at me with her teary eyes almost pleading to stop all this. I was helpless and I believed so was she. I had stopped in the mid, I didn't want to do this, for once I felt I was gathering the courage to help both of us out of this cruel fate but my father threatened me with his eyes gesturing towards my brother who was oblivious of what was going on.
I wonder why didn't he come and ask what was going on? But then I presumed, dad must have stopped him, threatened him with something just like me.
"Please, make her wear the nuptial thread." I heard the priest taking me out of my reverie. I made her wear the nuptial thread without looking into her eyes. I somehow felt guilty doing this to her, her vulnerable state wasn't giving me peace. I had a lot of questions in my mind, the girl who was introvert yet bold and lived outside the country all on her own, how could she agree to something like this.
Was she also threatened, just like me? It could be, but why?
I filled her hair partition with red vermillion while she clutched her blue bridal lehnga so tight, that it might have hurt her a lot.
'All that glitters is not gold', I have read it a lot and right now I am the witness of it. The mysterious nerd girl with round glasses and a novel in her hand always, who was the regular customer of my cafe from last one year, whom I used to presume a bold, secret agent was helpless just like me that she didn't even utter a word against all the mishappenings.
Was I too early to judge her?
Everyone cheered after we were announced, husband and wife. Weren't they the same people who were shocked and giving me suspicious looks a while ago? What happened now? I needed to leave that place as soon as possible, it was getting difficult to be around such spineless, double-faced people. No one even questioned this sudden announcement. It was quite suffocating for me and my newly wedded wife, well she looked like a dead soul, the one whose heart had just ripped out of her body. She was making me feel guilty about my actions without doing anything.
Adhiraj's Bhaiya was done with his marriage as well. He was giving me a questioning look but I stayed silent. After the marriage, Adhiraj Bhaiya and his bride stayed for a while dad told me we were about to leave early. It was for the good I thought.
