My eyes snapped open after a brief moment of disorientation. The sun was hitting me from the window to my left, which I had conveniently left ajar in my rush to get to bed. My mattress, which was supposed to be a queen, had half of my wardrobe stacked on the edge. I noticed some of the clothes I had laid beside me the previous night had been thrown to the floor as I tossed in my sleep. My blankets had been tucked tightly around me, as the cold September air surrounded me. The chill made my bones ache.
With a dull groan, I stood and closed the window. Why must it be so cold?
I rubbed my eyes tiredly and glanced at the clock resting on the floor beside my bed. Surprisingly enough, it was only 8, which meant I had about an hour and a half before class. I made the sudden decision to finish putting my clothes away before getting ready to go.
By the time I had put my clothing into the closet-like corner and folded the rest I had an hour left before class. Hanger after hanger, I had hung my clothes nicely in the closet. The dresser that I had moved days before my official move date sat in the corner of my room. I had folded the remainder of my clothing and placed them in the dresser. I finally felt satisfied with my work and moved to the shower. I opened my bathroom boxes that sat in the corner of the bathroom and took everything I needed.
After getting ready, I cooked a quick egg and topped it on my bagel. I finally felt like my life was being put back together. Quickly, so as not to be late, I grabbed my backpack- made sure I had my pens and notes- and rushed out the door.
The ride to the school was much easier without a hangover. I arrived at class five minutes early with a hopeful outlook about my day. I had found the new classroom in record time, luckily it happened to be just down the hall from my other class. I had at least learned how to get to the music department.
"Viv!" I heard someone shout from behind me. I turned my attention to the culprit. I had wondered if we had any other classes together.
"Hi, Liam," I smiled. His smile widened at the mention of his name. How cute.
"Did you get the job?" He asked, smile still present. He pulled the chair beside me out from under the desk and plopped his backpack onto the table. It made a thud as it hit the plastic table. He sat down and leaned back in the chair.
"I did, the couple who own it are so sweet!" I could still hear them bickering now, but sometimes that's how older couples show love. In all honesty, it was the only form of love I really knew. The memories I had of my parents felt like a whole lifetime ago, but with my dad out of the picture, my mom seemed much happier with her alone situation. Of course, she always had me around. I should call her.
"Were they fighting still?" Liam chuckled as he leaned forward and unzipped his bag. He pulled out his notebook and pen, the same ones he had yesterday. I laughed and nodded while pulling my own materials from my bag.
"You brought my notebook and pen at least right?" He teased and leaned back once more after setting his stuff on the table.
A blush set to my cheeks.
"Oh, I am so sorry! I totally stole your things!" I whispered. I could feel the blood rushing to my head in embarrassment. He laughed at my reddening cheeks.
"No, please keep them, I'm just messin' with ya." I could hear his faint New English accent behind his words. I tried to cool my face down as the professor entered the room and walked to the front. We still had about 2 minutes until class started. Things between Liam and I went quiet. I could feel the awkward tension, but he continued to look at me. I turned in my chair and faced the front, pretending to direct all my attention to the professor.
"Hey, so I was wondering," he pronounced 'wondering' more like 'wond-a-ring' I found it charming. "Are you busy?" He sighed out almost as if the words had been clogging his airways and he could finally breathe again when they were out.
