School had been uneventful. Luckily, I was on time, but the professor neither cared nor noticed. Liam acted as he normally did. He reminded me of the fun time we had had the previous night, which if we were in earshot of anyone else, would have sounded very suspicious. I acknowledged the night, but other than that, we didn't have much to say to each other. I had classical music history after my first class, another useless class, but at least the professor seemed to enjoy his job. I had always enjoyed classical music classes, especially from good teachers.

Work, once again, went great. Yossef and Talya made sure to praise me for the cleaning I had done the night before. While I felt it hadn't been deserved, they assured me that I had saved them from 2 hours of back aching torture. I laughed and went along with their antics. They always made sure to praise me for every task, no matter how small. I slowly got into the rhythm of my work and school life. My first week in New York flew by, leaving me to wonder where the time went. I finished my cleaning and wrapped up my work. There had been more dishes and more customers, but the work was still minuscule compared to some of the other jobs I have had.

On my walk home, I decided it best to call my mom. She answered after the first ring.

"Vivi!" She shouted through the speakers at me. I pulled the phone away from my face in shock and pulled a face. I must have looked comical to anyone watching.

"Hi, mom." I could hear my own happiness in my voice. My mom was clearly ecstatic to hear from me again.

"Oh, my baby, how are you doing? How's New York treating you? You know, the other day I was watching my phone and I saw a huge rat! He was eating food on the Subway!" My mom shouted, clearly distraught about the rat.

"I haven't met any rats yet mom, but I'll be sure to send you a picture if I ever do." I laughed and continued my stroll home.

"I miss you." My mom said, taking her excitement down a notch. I smiled sadly.

"I miss you too." I said solemnly, "but I'll be home for fall break, then winter break, then spring break. You'll see me soon!" I said, trying to bring her spirit up.

"I know, but I just can't stand thinking about you all on your own. Have you made a friend?" She accused. I had always been somewhat of a lone wolf in school. I thought back to Liam. I would consider him a friend. What about her? I didn't even know her name for christ's sake! I had been thinking about her for days, and I had only ever met her once! Why was I thinking about her so much?

"Yeah mom, I made a friend." I chuckled into the receiver. My mom cheered.

"Names? Can I get some names?" She questioned.

"Liam, he is in two of my classes, and he is sweet. He helped me get a new job." I thought back to the coffee shop. I had so much to share. "I'm working at a little place called Pereira's Cups & Co. It's owned by this cute old Jewish couple. Yossef and Talya. They're really sweet mom, they remind me of grandma and grandpa."

"So they're always arguing?" I snorted out a laugh.

"Yes! They bicker like them, but they also make me feel so safe." I knew my mom would appreciate that.

"I'm so glad to hear that, baby. Did you meet anyone? Any more friends?" I knew what she was implying.

"No mom," I scolded. "I haven't met anyone like that, but there is someone else. I met her at this little furniture shop." I debated whether or not to tell her more, as I had no idea anything about this woman, but ultimately, I had to tell my mother.

"Give me a name!" My mom shouted once again, excited to hear about me making friends.

"I don't know her name, I just know she seemed interesting and easy to talk to." I smiled to myself, this is ridiculous. She was at work, doing her job. Of course, she was easy to talk to, she was selling me things.
