All I can think about is Eva. What is this girl doing to me? I have to ignore her, I have to stop talking to her and being around her. I can't fall for her, I can't. I know how that goes. I've been broken before. But she said to stop having my mood swings. So I can't do anything, unless I want her mad at me. But, maybe, that's a good thing. I can't help but think about Eva as I fall asleep.
---------
I see her on the bus and she looks like she hasn't slept.
"Hey, Eva, are you okay?"
"Yeah, why?"
"You look like you haven't slept." She fuddles around with the bottom of her shirt. I notice a bruise on her forehead and I run my thumb over it. She swats my hand away and glares at me.
"I'm fine. I fell this morning." It does look like she fell.
"Be more careful next time."
"Why do you care?" I sigh, are we really back to this again?
"Because we're friends Eva, that's what friends do." We ride the rest of the way to school in silence.
We stop at the school and I insist on walking Eva to her locker so we could talk about our cookies from last night. As we're walking, she drops something. She bends down to get it and winces, in, pain.
"Hey, are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." She smiles at me, but it's not a wholehearted smile. It has sadness and hurt in it.
"Okay..." I'm reluctant, but I drop it anyway.
----------
At lunch, I pull her into an empty classroom again.
"You have got to stop doing this Ace!" I smirk at her and she shakes her head and scoffs.
"I'm sorry. I just wanted to ask you about this morning." She grows quite and looks at everything but me. I pin her against the door and I use one hand to pull her face towards me.
"Eva, why did you wince when you bent over." She doesn't answer, instead, she pulls her shirt up, just enough to show me her bruises. I look at them wide eyes. She didn't fall, there's no way. They're in the shape of a boot print.
"Eva, what happened?"
"I fell." She answers really quickly and I don't believe her.
"Eva, they're in the shape of a boot, there's no way you fell." She looks at my face, but won't meet my eyes. I still have my hand under her chin, keeping her from looking away.
There's silence, and then she finally looks into my eyes. There's hurt, betrayal, and fear.
"Why can't you be like everyone else and ignore me? Why can't you just leave me alone? Everyone else passes by me without so much as a second glance, and now, here you are, prying things out of me trying to get answers!"
"I want to help. Eva, tell me what's wrong. I'm not like everyone else. I can't let you suffer. Tell me." Her eyes start to fill with tears and I look at her with concern.
"I can't." She loosens out of my grip and leaves the classroom.
I walk out shortly after trying to collect my thoughts. I don't pay much attention to Nate talking to me at lunch, because I'm too busy worrying about what happened to Eva. Obviously some hit her, but who?
"Dude, are you listening?" I'm pulled out of my thoughts.
"Huh? Oh, yeah."
"What are you thinking about?"
"Oh, umm, nothing."
"It's something, spill it."
"It's nothing Nate." I look at him and see him raise his eyebrow at me, but doesn't press further.
After lunch, I walk to Culinary Arts and walk up to Eva.
"Hey Eva."
"Hey Ace." She doesn't have any kind of emotion in her voice, and that kind of scares me...
"Are you okay?"
"Hmm? Oh yeah, I'm okay." She looks away and at the teacher as Nate's lol comes in.
She has us bring our papers up from last night, we have to judge plus at least one other person. She then has us make a menu for a fake restaurant, and tells us we have until Friday to make it. It's now Wednesday. We have to have 5 or more items under each category. Appetizers, main dishes (have to have 8 or more under this one), sides, desserts, beverages, and we get to choose whether we have a kids menu at the end or not (which has to have 6 or more choices). We finish our appetizer portion before class ends and decide to work on it after school. I suggest we go to her house.
"Umm, can we do it at your house."
"We already cooked something in my house, you met my family, I want to meet yours."
"No you don't."
"Eva, yes I do."
"I promise you don't." She's looking everywhere else but at me. I sigh.
"Okay, we can do it at my house." She brightens up and kisses me on the cheek.
"Thank you!" She's smiling really big. I'm red, I can feel it. She kissed me. Oh hush. It was one kiss on the cheek.
"Yeah, anytime." We get on the bus and the ride there is silent. She's already texted her parents telling them where she'll be.
Whenever we get home, we're met by Maddie.
"Eva!" Eva smiles, an actual smile. I notice it's not forced, it's a real smile.
"Hey there Mads!"
"Heyyy, what about me!" Maddie turns to be a giggles.
"Ace!" I smile and spin her around. My mom comes in and tells us to be inside. We go up to my bedroom and start working on the fake menu again. We finish half of what the teacher wants us to put on there and decide to finish the rest tommorow.
"Hey Ace?"
"Hmm?"
"What do you do if your friend is being hurt by someone that's supposed to love them?"
"What exactly are you referring to?"
"Umm, it's nothing. I have to get going." With that, she leaves and I'm sitting on my bed, wondering what just happened. And again, all I think about as I fall asleep is Eva.
🐬Thanks for reading! I've been writing more than 1,000 words lately. 😂 So how about I just say that 800 will be the very least amount I'll write and leave it at that. Enjoy the rest of the story!🐬
