"Eva!" I wake up to my dad yelling up at me. Crap.
I head downstairs cautiously. Before I know it, I'm being thrown to the ground.
"Dad! Please no!" I beg him while crying.
"Stop crying you weak pest." I shut my mouth, but silent tears still fall. I face away from him and go to run for the door leading to the outside world, but before I can, my mom blocks it.
"Where do you think your going?" I'm officially screwed.
"N-no w-where." My dad drags me down on the floor by taking my kicking my feet from beneath me. He then proceeds to kick me in the stomach. So much for that healing up...
He takes a picture of all three of us and hits me over the head with it. Right in the forehead, and before I know it, I'm blacked out. My dad didn't used to be like this, nor did my mom. We used to be a happy family. But then my dad lost his parents and drifted from me. I'm not sure what got into Mom...
An hour later, I'm being waken up by the faint sound of a phone ringing. I know my mom and dad have already left because I don't see their car keys hanging from the key hooks. I sigh and realize I'm hurting. I'm hurting on my head, the picture frame, and my legs, must have done it while I was out, and my stomach. I pick myself up and hiss at the pain I feel whenever I do. I can still walk on my legs, so they're not broken. They are, however, very sore.
I see the call is from Ace and I pick it up.
"Hello?" My voice sounds more pained than I intended it to.
"Hey, are you okay? I didn't see you on the bus." Dang it. I clear my throat.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I hang up before he can get a word in. Since I missed the bus, I'll have to call my aunt Linda. I haven't mentioned her before. She's my mom's sister. She tells me to call her if I need anything, but I mainly call for rides to school whenever I miss the bus on times like these. But I also call to check in on her every so often.
"Yes?"
"Hey aunt Linda. Can I get a ride to school, I slept in again and my parents already left." I hear her chuckle on the other end.
"You have got to stop sleeping in." I smile a little and she hangs up. I get ready for school and in five minutes, I hear aunt Linda pull up. I go downstairs and get in the car. We don't ever really talk during car rides, just listen to music and sing along.
"Bye Eva, I love you."
"Bye aunt Linda, I love you too." I get out and head into school.
----------
At lunch, Ace came up to my table and sat down.
"Shouldn't you be sitting with Nate?" I ask this without looking up from my book.
"I told him I'd come over there in a second." I wait for him to add more and sigh when he doesn't. I look up from my book to look at him.
"Is there a reason you came over here?"
"Yeah."
"Well spit it out."
"Rude much?" I rolls my eyes at him and he smirks. He finds this funny?
"Why weren't you on the bus?" I freeze.
"I overslept." I say nonchalantly.
"Okay." He shrugs and reluctantly walks away. I breath out a breath I had no idea I was even holding in.
----------
In Culinary Arts I see that Ace is already here so I sit beside him.
"Eva?"
"Yeah Ace?"
"What happened to your head?" My hand instinctively goes to my forehead.
"I umm, I fell." I refuse to meet his eyes.
"Whatever you say..."
We work on our fake menu and by the end of the class period, we only have beverages left to put on it. We decide not to put a kids menu on it and agree to finish it at his house.
----------
We get to his house and start walking up his driveway. And he starts up a conversation.
"Why don't you ever want to do any of this stuff at your house Eva?" He asks referring to the assignments in out Culinary class.
"My parents don't like company." I shoot the answer back a little too quickly. He doesn't answer back, instead, he turns his whole body to face me. He grabs my shoulders and turns me towards him. He then looks into my eyes.
"Eva, tell me what's wrong." It's a command, not a question.
"I don't know what your talking about."
"Pull your shirt up."
"Excuse me?" He sighs and rolls his eyes.
"Just do it." So I do, and he looks at my stomach with shock and sympathy evident on his face.
"See, what happened? It's looks even worse than last time. Don't tell me you fell, because I know you're not that clumsy and those are not from falling down." I sigh and don't meet his eyes. We sit there in silence for a while.
"Dang it Eva! Just tell me." He seems annoyed at this point. I start to tear up and he notices. He wraps me in a hug and I wince.
"I'm sorry."
"It's okay, it's not your fault." I sigh. "It's my dad's fault." He looks at me wide eyed.
"My parents hit me. This week it's mainly been my dad, but they both do it. No one has ever noticed and your the first to know about it. It started in my 10th grade year, so about a year ago. My dad lost his parents and that's when he started getting drunk and doing it. We used to be a happy family."
"Oh Eva." I break down and he pulls me to him. I cry into his chest and he just sits there, hugging me. It feels nice to finally have a friend.
