I'm driving, and all I can think about, is how lucky I am to have Ace. He has his hand on my thigh and is smiling, he hasn't stopped since we stopped talking 3 minutes ago. He seems to be deep in thought. I'm so happy to have him, what I did to deserve him, I don't know.
We pull up to Ace's house, and I immediately notice my parents car after we get out. I go stiff and Ace notices.
"What is it baby?" I blush at the comment, but immediately go back to being scared.
"It's my parents." I whisper, really scared at this point.
I look over at Ace to see his face holds anger. He's so stiff and his jaw is clenched. Tears start to cloud my vision and Ace notices.
"Shh..." He pulls me into a hug and I wrap my arms around him.
"I'm scared Ace."
"It's okay, I'm right here."
He calms me down and we walk inside. We see my parents and Ace's mom in the kitchen talking. The look on Ace's mom's face is indifferent as my mother cries about how she "misses her baby".
Ace and I walk into the kitchen together and my mom hops up out of her chair. She rushes up to me, arms extended to me. I back away and Ace shields me away from her. My mom goes from "caring" to angry all in one moment.
"Now that's quite enough Eva, you've caused enough trouble." I can tell Ace is getting angrier and angrier.
"Let's go home sweetheart." I scrunch my nose up at the word sweetheart.
"No." She goes crazy, but Ace still refuses to let her get to me.
"Stop acting like a little brat and come on! They don't care about you, who would? How could anyone ever love you?! You're just a burden to those around you! Now let's GO!" Ace snaps.
"Now you listen here ma'am, your daughter is the best thing that's ever happened to me. She is not a burden, and if you think that, then why'd you keep her all those years? She doesn't want to come with you because you don't care about her, we however, do. So I'm going to ask you one time to leave before I call the cops!" My mom looks at Ace shocked, straightens her coat, and leaves.
"Oh my gosh Ace." I whisper ever so slightly.
"That was amazing, you really mean all that?"
"Of course I do baby girl, and I have much, much more to say to you." I blush again and smile really big.
"Really?"
"Of course. You're such an amazing person, you kept to yourself so you didn't have to expose your parents. You were worried about them finding you and hurting us, not you, but all of us. You're the nicest girl I've ever met and I'm so glad we became Culinary Arts partners." I had tears in my eyes from his words.
"Oh baby, what's wrong?" I blush again.
"That's so sweet. Oh my gosh. Ace, you're such a great boyfriend!"
I throw myself into his arms and let my arms go around his neck. He snakes his hands around my waist and pulls me closer to him. He puts his face into my hair and let's out a content sigh.
The moment's ruined however, when Ace's phone rings. He huffs in annoyance and takes out his phone to look at the caller ID. He looks at it and his face lights up. He answers and I look at him confused. He mouths "It's Nate" and I shake my head in recognition.
"How's she doing?" I don't hear Nate's response, so I whisper to Ace to put it on speaker.
"-fine." Fine?
She's doing fine. Oh thank the Lord.
"Hey man, I'm sorry about what happened in the hospital." Ace looks apologetically at his phone.
"It's fine dude, it was my fault too."
"When is she coming home?"
"They have to keep a close watch on her for the next week or so." I ask the question I've been wondering this whole time.
"What happened Nate?" I blurt it out and look at the phone hopeful.
"I'm not sure. I came home after going to the store and found her outside in our driveway. She had blood around her head and I freaked out. I thought to text Ace first, I'm glad you guys came when you did. The doctor said if we would have called a minute later, she would've died." Hus voice cracks and I can tell he's crying.
"She's okay now Nate, and we would do anything to help a friend." I smile at the phone reinsuringly, even though he can't see us.
"Thanks." We hang up and fix something to eat.
When we finish eating, we go to the hospital to check up on Nate's mom. She's doing good, but was sleeping when we went in.
Tonight I'm going to tell Ace how I feel about him.
We ger inside and go up to my room. Ace flops down on my bed and I lay down next to him, putting my head on his chest.
It's now or never.
"Ace?"
"Yes?" I take a deep breath and raise my head so I'm looking at his face.
"You're so great. I'm so lucky I met you. I was determined to never let anyone in. I lost my best friend in 8th grade because she had to move away. I didn't want to loose someone else. But you tried anyway. At first I thought you were nothing but a jerk and some big headed bad boy jock, but you proved me wrong. You're so kind, you just needed someone to open you up. I've been so happy since I met you. You saw past everything and knew what was going on and I can't thank you enough of that. You're literally the best and I love you." Oh no. It just slipped out.
He hugs me really close and kisses the top of my head.
"I love you too."
I smile and I knew, from that point on, I would always love Ace.
