Danni's POV
The chime of my phone snapped me out of my work-induced daze. I didn't realise how late it had gotten until i saw the hours 19:47 on my phone beside me. My head was throbbing and my stomach was screaming for the meals I had missed whilst catching up on my work, but the headache that was the impending mass of paperwork I had to do had finally cleared.
With more pain than ever, i rubbed my eyes which felt like bruises set into my skull. I held the thought of the bottle of wine in my fridge at the back of my mind and reached down to slip my shoes back onto my feet- formal shoes were always uncomfortable to work in so i took them off as much as i could.
Ensuring i tidied my desk before hand for the benefit of tomorrow's lack of motivation, i slipped out of my classroom and headed towards the exit of the building, savouring the rubbing of my shoes against the 109 blisters on my feet because at least it meant the day was over.
There was never a better feeling than slipping behind the steering wheel and dragging the car door shut behind you after what feels like the longest shift ever. Before i put the key into the ignition, i decided to flip through my phone and make a queue of songs to accompany me on my drive home and then i saw the message which I accidentally ignored earlier.
Seeing as it was only Dan asking when i was home, I chose not to reply- simply because he'd find out in about 10 minutes.
The drive home was oddly ominous today, there were hardly any other cars on the road and the sky was blanketed by a thick layer of fog, allowing me to hardly see what was only a small amount distantly ahead of me. I was thankful to be cleared of the weird vibes that the evening served me when I finally pulled into my drive way and made my way up the stairs to my apartment.
When I saw the bronze plated numbers nailed to my door that marked my destination, I almost cried with joy. This enjoyment only increased when i shut the door behind me and threw my bag, jacket and shoes into the darkest corner of my living room until tomorrow, and then sunk into the sofa.
I hadn't even had time to get comfortable when a quick-paced knock rung throughout the room. I groaned loud enough so that whoever it was could hear that they'd massively inconvenienced me.
"Danni open the door", of course it was Dan. I would have made a by animated show of ignoring him but the foreign sense of seriousness in his tone intrigued and troubled me. Anything other than a huge lack of concern for any general matter was very rare when coming from Dan's mouth- he was the least serious person i knew.
"It's open, just walk in." I hadn't even finished when he burst in and sat next to me, a bit too close to comfort. "What do you want?"
"Why do you always assume i want something?" His ability to get distracted from the main issue at hand was admirable.
"Because you do. Now answer the question because you're taking up Netflix time."
"I'm choosing to ignore that rude statement." He winked at me. "There was just a dude outside earlier and he seemed really odd. I wanted to let you know."
I didn't quite comprehend what he mean, "yeah people walk by all the time. Loads of people live in this apartment block. I'm not comprehending why you're telling me."
He looked really peeved off as if i was completely stupid, "What? No. He was outside your door. That one there. With the number 13 on it. The one that leads into your apartment."
How sarcasm was suffocating but the confusion that followed wasn't much better. To get into the actual block, you needed a key or to be buzzed in by someone else- all of whom had cameras next to the buttons to carry out the command. No one in the block would let a stranger in. More importantly to the issue of how he got in: why was it my apartment he was interested in?
"I don't understand. How would he have got in for a start?"
"Well that's what i asked him and he said he knew you and you lent your key, but it seemed like bullshit. He wouldn't answer when i asked how he knew you either." The lack of humour in his voice was uncomfortable.
"Did you ask for his name or anything?" I was praying the answer was a yes because I don't really know who wouldn't.
"Of course I did. He completely changed the subject and then started to leave. I called after him but he didn't turn around or anything. I wasn't wearing trousers so didn't want to chase after him because Mrs Richland yelled at me last time I left my apartment 'inappropriately dressed'." He screwed up his face at this as if genuinely offended.
"Ok creepy. What did he look like?" Analysing appearances was an area Dan excelled in, he was one of the most critical people i knew and so i expected a huge analysis.
"Well he was wearing a hoodie so I didn't see his hair and part of his face." He paused to consider for a little while. "He was kinda tall, his eyes were light coloured but I didn't get close enough to see. They were probably blue or green. I couldn't really get a gage on his age- he might have been about thirty or a little younger." He stared off into space as if thinking. "His voice was pretty deep and he sounded well spoken. I can't really remember anything else about him. Do you reckon we should call the police?"
The fact that nothing was taken and there was no violence involved meant that it wouldn't really be taken seriously. There was the option of checking the home cameras, but they were only live videos and you couldn't go back to previous footage because it didn't save any. Their purpose was merely to allow people to see who was at the door as a security measure- what good they did in this situation however. I wondered if anyone else had seen him in their cameras whilst he was outside and Dan seemed to of read my thoughts.
"I asked everyone who was home when he was here if they saw him in their cameras and recognised him, but no one had a clue. It would have been about 6pm when he came so it makes sense that no one was expecting guests."
I had never been so confused in my life. "How frustrating. But we shouldn't involve police. We should just wait and see what happens. He might show up again but meanwhile, we should ask everyone in the block if they have lost their keys recently. Other than that, I don't really know what else to do apart from be cautious."
"Yeah cool, i was thinking the same thing. I'll ask around tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'll leave you to some privacy with your bottle of wine, enjoy."
"Thanks Dan, be careful alright?"
"Sure, sure, goodnight." He left and shut the door behind him, and i slowly rose and locked it (something I wasn't really accustomed to doing).
This was all before i resorted to drowning my worries in alcohol, to allow myself to have a restful sleep before work tomorrow.
