I yawned as I watched the sun beginning to peek out from the horizon. The birds flew over our heads chirping like mad. The ground was still wet from last night's heavy rain. The mud stained the bottom of my boots and pants.
Cleo and Naomi stretched and yawned, desperately trying to keep their eyes open. The rest of the coven sat to the side. Like us, they are waiting for Lizzie.
This morning my mam woke me up at about five o'clock and dragged me to the temple for an early class, which will continue until the afternoon.
I have no idea what lesson we are going to be taught but couldn't it wait until ten so that I could sleep longer.
The cold nip in the air made my breath steam up. The smoke floated into the air.
" What's taking her so long." Naomi groaned rubbing her droopy eyes with her palm.
" Who fucking knows." I groan.
When the one-hour mark of waiting on the dusty floor in the cold hit Lizzie and Maxine emerged from wherever they were.
" Today I decided that our initiates must learn how to participate in pagan traditions. I know you have been watching us for years but doing it a lot different than watching. There is complex spell chanting, dancing, and potions to make. Martha will take you guys first for the dancing. Eva will take you for potions and I will take you for spells. Understood?"
" Yes." We said in unison.
" Let's get started." Lizzie commanded.
Martha stepped up and led the three of us to a room on the far end of the temple.
The room was completely empty. Large cobwebs hung in the corners of the roof. Cockroaches and lizards ran to shelter when we stepped in.
Halin and Lily swooped down and each caught a lizard before it managed to get away.
Blood sprayed as they sank their beaks into the lizard's flesh. Within two minutes the lizards were no more.
" Well, that was a pleasant sight." Cleo grimaced.
" Yeah tell me about it." Naomi sighed.
Halin and Lily looked up at us. Their beaks covered in blood, bits of flesh hung out their mouths.
" Seriously guys."
" We were hungry master." Halin squawked.
" I could see that." I chuckled.
" Enough chatting let's get started. Gather in a circle." Martha ordered.
This is the most controlling I've ever seen her.
We gathered into our little circle with Martha at the head of it.
" As you all know the dance is one of the three most important aspects of our traditions. The dance allows us to channel our energy into the ground. Also, it's good fun let's not forget that. The dance must be done in perfect sync. If anybody slips up then we must start again. I'll demonstrate then we can all do it together."
Martha bent her arms so that her right arm was up and her left arm went to the side. She stretched her left foot out and reached down to touch it.
Her movements were slow. Then like a flash the speed picked up.
She twirled around and made these weird screaming noises. As she twirled she bent her arms in different positions. If anybody else saw her doing this they might think she is insane but this is a dance that witches grow up watching.
