"Maya, you're late and you get here by laughing," my mom yelled. She wore a plain black mermaid dress and I'm pretty sure she's wearing flats. She hates heels.
"I'm only a minute late," I said looking at my phone that read 19:01.
We actually drove kinda slow because we were uhm... you know what we were doing. But my mom doesn't so we have to know.
"I'm so sorry, ma'am. We got delayed in traffic," Ntebatse lied. "Well, next time leave campus earlier," Pertunia said. "We definitely will, ma," Ntebatse said. I'm trying so hard not to laugh.
"I'm Maya's mom, Pertunia," my mom said reaching her hand out. "Ntebatse. Your daughters girl- your daughters friend," Ntebatse said.
"Girl?" my mom questioned. "We're seeing each other," I lied. I can't tell my mom that I'm fucking around.
"You're into girls?" Pertunia asked. "Mama, I told you last week," I said. "Oh. Where's Fortu- actually, I don't wanna know. Be at the pool by 19:30. Your room in the east wing. Your name is on the door," she said and walked to greet the other guests.
"Hey. Maya Mphato, black Mercedes Benz CLA AMG," I say to the lady. "Thank you, your bags will be taken to your room," she smiles and types what I just said to the laptop in front of her.
Ntebatse pushes the big pivoting glass door with a black frame. I take her hand into mine and we walk into the house.
I look up to see a big chandelier handing over our heads. The walls were white and the room was big.
"You came, great," Noma said. "You have a nice place," I say and hug her.
"Noma, this is Ntebatse. We're fucking," I say to her. "You know that I don't care, Maya. Hey," my sister says and walks away. Gosh, she's so annoying.
This place is actually really cool.
"Maya," Kesa screamed and pulled me into her arms. "I missed you," she said dramatically. "You saw me just last week, dummy" I laughed.
"Hey," I wave to Aaliyah. "Uhm... this is Ntebatse. Ntebatse, meet my dumb cousin, Kesa and her girlfriend, Aaliyah," I said.
"Finally, another stud," Kesa said. "Let's go get a few drinks and we'll meet at the pool," my cousin said and took my date away from me, leaving me with Aaliyah.
"Hey, you wanna get high quickly?" she asked me. "What do you have?" I ask. "We have a bit over two dozen space cookies in the car and a few joints," she said. "Let's get into it, ma," I said and we walked outside to their car.
She pulled out her phone to call Kesa but she didn't answer so we called Ntebatse and told them to meet at the car.
"I got you vodka," Ntebatse said and handed me a long class of what I thought was water when I saw her approaching us.
"And I got you five space cookies," I replied and handed her a clear plastic bag with chocolate and cappuccino flavored cookies.
"These taste amazing," I moaned after taking a bite. "Thanks. Your drug dealer cousin started a new business. Now I don't just sell drugs, I bake them as well. Does that even make sense?" Kesa laughed.
I took a sip of the vodka after we finished the edibles. Ntebatse took my hand into hers and we walked to the pool area.
After what felt like a million hours of listening to my sister talk, I felt my high slip into my body really slowly.
I held tighter onto Ntebatse's hand to prevent myself from falling. "I think that we need to sit down," I whisper and she laughs.
Her laugh causes me to laugh softly with her. My mom stares at me and I stand firmly so that she doesn't suspect me.
My cousin was standing not far from us and laughing with Aaliyah. I'm trying so hard not to laugh right now.
My phone vibrated in my hand and I looked at the screen to see a text from Kesa.
Kesa: Let's go hotbox the car.
Me: Now?
Kesa: Now.
"Let's go hotbox," I say to Ntebatse and we walk away from the pool.
