When I returned to my desk, I was giving myself a mental fist-pump. But my happiness quickly faded when I realized that I had to finish my paperwork.
I leaned over my desk, running my fingers through my thick hair. This is gonna take forever...
> one half hour later <
I stood up, grabbing my purse and slinging it over my shoulder. I looked over at JJ, and she smiled at me. Had she been looking at me? I thought. Part of me was hoping that she was.
I pushed my chair in behind me, walking over to the stairs. JJ followed behind me. I looked over as she caught up, walking next to me.
"Hey!" She said. Her blonde hair was waving in the breeze of our stride. I smiled.
"Hey." I looked back ahead, opening the door with my shoulder. "So, where are we eating?"
JJ's smile faded, leaving a puzzled expression on her face. "I don't know, actually." She tucked her hair behind her ear, a silver earring reflecting the sunlight.
I walked down the sidewalk, heading to where my car was parked. JJ and I lived so close, we carpooled almost every day. It was practically her car too.
I fastened my seat belt, and she did the same. Looking backwards, I exited my parking spot. We headed to the local cafe near the BAU. My window was open, so my hair was blowing in the wind as we drove.
I would've looked over at JJ, but that probably would end in another car. Crashed into us. Well, now that it was out of the question, I pulled into the cafe's parking lot. I turned off the car, stopping the radio's noise. We both stepped outside, walking over to the entrance.
As we walked in, I looked around. Ivy was draped from the ceilings, a warm lighting flooding the room. Dark wood counter-tops contrasted with the white tables, and I ran my fingers down the smooth finish.
I placed down my purse. We both sat down in white metal chairs, on opposite sides of a dainty, circular table. I looked around at the place.
"I gotta say, this is the most aesthetically pleasing cafe that I've ever been in. And that's saying a lot, considering we travel so frequently."
JJ gave a small laugh, seemingly agreeing with what I had said. Her laugh was so cute. But I couldn't think of that. She's a co-worker, Emily. As if she could feel like that towards you.
JJ noticed that I had a stern look on my face. "Em?"
I looked up, startled. "Oh, sorry! Just.. spacing out." She nodded understandably.
We continued to chat about the case we had just started working on. It was right here in Quantico, which was scary to think about. I had always thought of the unsubs being in other places. Never here. It was hard to believe, like I had just snapped out of a trance I had been in my entire time at the bureau.
The unsub was a stalker, who hadn't killed anyone yet. He was photographing his victims and then mailing them the pictures. There was no physical impact on the people, he just wanted to establish fear, like nobody was safe. And that's terrifying. But like everyday at the job, you can't think about that.

As we returned to the bureau, I was sort of disappointed that our time had to end. But we had to think about the case, nothing else.
As we walked up to the door, I noticed a small brown package tied with burlap strands.
"Um.. Emily?" I looked back at her, as she was a few steps behind.
Her attention focused to me. "What is it?"
"It's a package.. and it has a piece of paper on it."
"Well, what does it say?"
"Jareau and Prentiss."
