Jen POV

Why her? Why did it have to happen to MY mom? Sure, sometimes I felt that she didn't have time for me, but I knew she loved me. And I love her. We were both silent for awhile, still on the phone. I finally broke that silence and managed, "Wha- what, um, stage?"

"3."

"Oh Mom, I'm here for you. Im here."

"Thank you so much sweetheart. I love you so much, never forget that. "

"I love you too Mom," I sobbed. Then an idea hit me. "Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Why don't I come back home for the holidays? Winter break is coming up in two weeks. I can fly back to Melbourne."

"I would love that, honey. But, where are you going to find the money?"

"I still have a little saved up."

"Ok, well I have to go to an appointment. I'll talk to you later."

"Bye Mom. Stay safe, I love you," I sniffled, drying up my tears.

"I will, I love you too sweetheart. Goodbye."

Well. That just downed my week. Might as well stay in my dorm to cool off and think things through. Thank god it's Saturday, I would have not been able to go to class. After a few minutes, Calum text me.

From Cal-Pal: course babe, I'll be there in two. Everything alright?

To Cal-Pal: well, idk....

From Cal-Pal: awww hon. Im on my way. I cant bear to see my girl sad ;(

About two minutes later, Calum came knocking on my door. When I opened the door, he had a worried expression on his face.

"Are you okay?"

I shrugged my shoulders and gestured him to sit down on my bed.

"What happened?" He said, sitting down.

"Well, my mom called me this morning. And- she. Well, she has breast cancer. Stage 3," I whimpered. Then i just kind of broke down sobbing my eyes out. I expected him to say what everyone else would say. Like "oh im so sorry" or "it'll be alright", but he answered with something that really touched my heart.

"Jen, look at me. Life throws so many surprises at you. Whether they be good or bad. But you need to be strong and take on those surprises. And I know you can. So you stay strong with your mom until the very end." He said, with tears forming in his eyes. I mean, I appreciate his sincerity and all, I was just curious as to why he cared so much. He's not one to cry all the time.

"Thanks Cal. Thank you so much. I appreciate it, really, but, why do you care so much?" I asked, trying my best not to sound rude. As soon as I said that, his eyes seemed to grow softer.
"Cal?"

"Jen, I never really told you about my dad. My dad had cancer too. He was so weak. On his last day, he told me to stay strong. I was a wreck for about two months after he died. Then one day, I remembered his words. His words pulled me out of a dark hole that I'd been in for those two months. "
At this point Calum was sobbing. I just pulled him into a hug and turned his head to face me.

"That means we'll have each other. We'll stay strong together and never break away no matter what." I said with a new confidence in my tone.
"And that's a promise."
