"I'm that double-edged sword that, when wielded by the swordsman, is bound to cut both ways."

I watched eagerly as the cashier scanned the rectangular box and read out the numbers that appeared on her screen. Just as Taehyung was about to spend his money for the fourth time today, I scooted in front of him to prevent him from doing so.

"There's no need. We're even now. That thing you had to pay for earlier... it was my fault, so it's only fair that I take this one into my own hands."

With his fingers still in the pocket of his wide leg pants, he paused and gave me a strange look.

Why is he staring at me like that...

Had my tone been too soft or something?

However, his demeanor was quick to return to his usual, haughty disdain.

"You're broke as fuck, so don't even think about it."

I pulled out a paper document from the pocket of my purse and shoved it in his face. "Not after my first paycheck!"

"You're not supposed to get that until the end of the week..."

"It was given to me a little bit early because, as you said, i'm 'broke as fuck'," i grinned delightfully as I completed the payment. "Seokjin is the kindest. I'll make sure to work extra hard after this."

"And no sneaking me out during my shifts," I added, pointing a finger at him threateningly.

"I can't promise that," he responded blatantly.

Once the three of us had exited the store, I ripped open the carefully packaged product to marvel at my first ever purchase from my first earnings in my new life. To my surprise, the overall design of the device was quite similar to the modern phone models that humans had been developing since the beginning of the 21st century. Regardless, it had been twice as expensive.

"How come the technology here is so advanced?"

"We may be old, but we're not stupid," said Taehyung.

"Okay, boomer."

"What in the hell is a boomer?"

"You just proved my point," I sniggered, returning my attention to the object in my hands.

As I pressed my thumb against the button on the edge of the screen, the phone lit up and so did my eyes. I swiped across the screen excitedly and dialed the first number that came to my mind.

"Could you give us a moment?" Taehyung asked Yeji, who nodded slowly in response.

He glanced sideways at the passerbys, then grabbed my wrist and veered me into a quiet corner.

"Who are you calling?" He whisper-yelled at me.

"What does it matter to you?" I yelled back, smacking the green icon and placing the phone against my ear.

"Is it a human?"

I covered my opposite ear with my palm and listened closely, anticipating an answer.

"If it's a human, it'll never work."

The call went straight to voicemail and my heart grew heavy.

"Jimin? Jimin, if you can hear me, please give me a call," i pleaded into the speaker.

"Who's Jimin?" Taehyung scowled at me. "Is that a girl or a boy?"

Goodness. So many questions. Could he not mind his own business for a change?
