"Sir, you wanted to see me?" Jake said, entering the captain's office.

"Yes, Peralta. Please, have a seat"

He hesitantly walked across the room, and sat down, a bit confused.

Next to him, a girl about his age, wearing some gray jumpsuit pants, clearly not hers, and a big nypd hoodie.

She looked shocked, terrified... and beautiful.

He didn't know how, but even without make up or nice clothes, even having sleep-deprived eyes and messy hair, she still managed to be the prettiest girl he had ever seen.

Suddently, she looked up, and their eyes met, making him blush hard and immediately look away.

Gosh, he hadn't even noticed he had been staring at her.

She must've thought he was a weirdo...

"Well done, Jake. Another chance thrown to the wind" he thought, hating himself more than ever.

"This is my niece, y/n. Her apartment was set aflame, earlier today. It most certainly was arson" Holt said, with an unusual emotion in his voice.

He seemed to care a lot about the girl.

"God, that's terrible... do we have any suspects? Leads?"

"Y/n does not know many people in town, and even in her hometown she was respected and loved, so we do not know who could have done this"

"Oh..." he said, worried.

"...And sadly, the culprit did not leave any kind of clue, so we have no leads, at the moment"

"So... did you call me in to take the case?"

"No. I have already assigned it to detective Diaz"

"...Well, that hurts" he muttered.
Then he thought about it for a moment.
"Why, then?"

"...I need you to protect y/n until the case is solved. I could not bear anything happening to her, and, even tho you are very immature most of the time, I trust you, and know that you can be very responsible, if you want to"

Jake processed all that information, and, confused, and also a bit shaken by the whole 'I trust you' thing, replied.

"Ok, first off, I'm not immature, ok?"

"...You were making an airplane with a sheet of paper you found in the bin next to your desk, before I called you in..."

"Second" he interrupted him "...What do you mean with 'protect her'?"

"I mean bringing her to a safehouse and staying there with her until this is all over"

"...And for how long?"

"I do not know. It could be a few weeks, it could be months... but I need you to do this, Jacob"

"But, sir... why me?" he said confused "I mean, you said it yourself, I'm immature! And childish!"

"Yes, but I confide you will not be, this time"

"Sir-

"It is an order, Peralta" the captain cut him off. He seemed angry, and very concearned about his niece, that in the meantime, had been staring at them, scared.

She must've still been shaken by what had happened. I mean, seeing your apartment burn down doesn't seem really great...

"You can go to your place and take the necessary, before you go. You are leaving immediately, understood?"
