See, I told you one chapter a day :D

"Dareka ga egaita sekai no naka de
anata wo kizutsuketaku wa nai yo
Oboeteite boku no koto wo
azayaka na mama"

[I'm standing in this world that someone imagined
I never want to hurt you, so until the end
I'm begging you, please, just to remember me...
As clear as I used to be]

- Unravel, TK Ling Toshite Sigure

《——————————————————————————————》

To be born with a hollow soul is quite unfortunate.

Maybe, this journey here, is where he can get a start in actually having a life, and not just 'surviving', and even for surviving, barely.

What is the emptiness in my chest?
Where do we belong?
Why do people hate us?
Are we monsters?
Well, now, we are.

And to some extent, yes, they are. To the society of humans, they are a threat that might possibly start a massacre across the entire city. Humans fear the unknown, and defensive when it comes to powerful beings, with the exception of God.

And well, yes, to answer the boy's question, as the bloodshed begins, they have truly became monsters. The blood tainted their names, and now, they are the targets to avoid and to exterminate.

In other words, even if you don't kill, you will get hunted; if you killed, you will surely be a target.

And since everyone's thinking 'monsters' when ghouls are mentioned, then they become monsters. It is to protect themselves from the harm. This is the Leaf of Hope troop is doing. They are going to find hope by leaving the city to the outskirts of Japan, mainly around the areas where they can live without harming humans again. Unfortunately, for them, Itomori is taken, and there have been rumours that a certain mermaid girl lives there, which, well, makes the life harder; they have to prepare the consequences, since there isn't any way to turn back now. They have already bought the tickets for the train, and returning them will be a hassle.

And by the meaning of hassle, they couldn't be bothered. Who is willing to take their time ordering the tickets, then realised, around a week to the day where the plan is about to be executed to return the tickets and foil the plan in the process? No. Time is precious, and they have no time, either.

The leader, a boy who has a hollow soul, the eyes of darkened brown with no life in them as they stare into space, is named "Shigetori" (隆鳥), or what the rest of the gang calls him. He dislikes the term of "Leader" or "Captain", because it just sounds so... Formal, and well, disgustingly foreign to him. The Leaf of Hope is a family, where they help each other out; calling formal terms creates unnecessary distance, and Shigetori doesn't want that. I'm sure that you don't call your parents, "Sir" and/or "Madame" in any way, do you? (If you do, I feel bad for you man-)

Of course, the due date of the time when they are going to actually go on the train is next week Monday.
And today is Monday. They still have a week to go.

And a week seems like a lot, but it really isn't. They have a lot of things to prepare for, and a lot of things to think about before this trip.

They know they will not be returning to the city of Tokyo anymore.
They will have to go to Itomori, settle there for a while, before moving to somewhere else; or they would stay there if the place seems good to them.

They are literally migrating in the country, even though they are born in this very country. The isolation they are feeling every day seems to be too much for them.

They never wanted to be ghouls. They just want to live a decent life.
It was only Fate that chose them to become such creatures of inhuman diet characteristics and abnormal healing abilities.
They would, as much as others, like to reject the ghoul part of them; but they are ghouls. There are no human parts of them.
Well, some of them are halves, some aren't; it is quite a diverse group that are working together.

They hate themselves to not be a part of the society, or rather, can't be a part of the standards of normal society. When people talk about ghouls, they think of them as horrible, morbid creatures that murders with no remorse, when in fact, the ghouls have feelings, too, with the rare exceptions of maybe one or two who never really cared about such things, and even then they might have reasons to why they are like that now.

Humans fear the unknown. Ghouls fear the unknown, too.
In some ways, they are alike.
But humans think that they are different to ghouls; that ghouls are dangerous and the only way to stop the insecurity is to eliminate the source of the problem, in this case, all of the ghouls.
And that is precisely not how you should solve problems. Humans are stupid.

The next time, if the pattern is a race, you murder those of that specific race.
The next time, if the pattern is women, men or non-binary, you murder those of that same group.
The next time, if the pattern is animals, you murder the animals.
The next time, if the pattern is a country, you massacre a country's people...

And the cycle continues. Murdering and killing is not the option here; it will only spread unwanted hate and the seed of wars.

And people should remember that, because Shigetori, clearly, remembers the massacre of his parents. And that hurts.

The ghouls of the Leaf of Hope are victims to the society that humans created for themselves, intending to impose the will of theirs on to creatures who don't belong. Oh, how they have dreamed of paying their feelings of hatred back at them, but, to Shigetori, it doesn't seem right. And that is partially the difference between a normal group of ghouls and the Leaf of Hope: the Leaf of Hope doesn't harm people unless they have to.

Shigetori wants people to remember that there are ghouls that want to co-exist with humans, who are willing to change for the sake of the society that is modified for only humans to exist.
He wants them to remember that, and not a mental image, an impression, that ghouls are horrifying, absolutely terrible serial killers that eat their victims after their deaths.

He doesn't want humans to think that all ghouls are bad; he wants them to see that their are good ghouls out there, too, and that, with this stereotype, it hurts them to hear such things being said about them when they do not apply to these words.

He wants them to remember the Leaf of Hope as a group of good ghouls.
He wants to be remembered to be a good person.

He wants to be remembered.
For the time of his life, he wants to be remembered.

That's his only wish; if he dies, he wants someone to remember him, and to never forget him.

That's that.
