Chapter 3- Fresh Faces

(Slight mentions of abuse/assault, I'll warn when the moments start)

Korra's POV

The next day came around and for once I was excited to learn airbending, mainly because I invited (Y/N) to come to the island but to see if I can accomplish something when trying to airbend and who knows (Y/N) might give me that extra push.

As I was preparing myself to try the panel exercise again I saw (Y/N) walk towards us. "Oh Korra, who is that, she looks familiar?"Ikki asked me and before I could stop any embarrassing antics Tenzin did for me. "Kids this is (Y/N), Korra's friend, although she has changed the last time I saw her" Tenzin as he introduces her to the kids. "I've aged Tenzin, good to see you"The (y/e/c) girl said while giving him a hug. "Hey Korra, what exercise is this?" She asked me while waving and then staring at the spinning panels. Tenzin then explained the exercise to (Y/N) and confidently asked,"Do you think I can try it out?" "Sure but I still haven't been able to get it"I said to her unsure if she could get through the panels. (Y/N) smirked at me and walked towards the contraption, got into a stance and within a few seconds she was through. Jinora blew air at the panels and in spinned faster as (Y/N) walked back towards us. "So... How did I do?" She asked while Tenzin, Ikki, Meelo and I stared at her with our mouths open in shock. Before I could say anything Meelo breaks the silence and says,"You are magic woman!!" (Y/N) chuckled at his comment and rubbed the top of his head and came up to me and closed my mouth for me. "Thank you, now isn't this Korra's training session?" She reminded me and actually helped me with my confidence.

I ready myself again, "If she can do it, I can do it"I said to myself thinking of being like the leaf or whatever Tenzin said. I tried to rush through the panels but ended up getting hit by every single one. I got angry and firebended the panels to a crisp and almost hit (Y/N) as she dodged it last second and stared at me for nearly giving her a haircut. "Korra this isn't something you can force, If you would only listen to me"Tenzin lectured on but I cut him off in anger. "I have been, but you know what I think, maybe the problem isn't me, maybe the reason I haven't learned airbending yet is you're a terrible teacher" I storm off and hear (Y/N) say to them,"I'll talk to her"As if I needed saving or something but I know she didn't mean it like that.

I stopped walking while staring at the view of the probending arena and heard her stand next to me. "Korra I know you're struggling but you'll get it soon, I've got a feeling" She said slightly smiling. I stayed silent contemplating on how I was going to learn airbending. "You know, the day is still young, how about we head into the city and I show you my favorite spots"She asked and I smiled at the thought of spending time with her again. "Yeah that sounds nice, let's go" I said and turned to her admiring her (y/e/c) eyes as they looked at the city.

(Timeskip) (Y/N)'s POV

It had been a couple of hours since me and Korra went back into the city. We stopped at a popular tea shop and picked up lunch along the way and had a ton of random conversations, Korra explaining her firebending lessons, to me explaining how I got into probending, but there was one more place I had to show her. "Come on Korra, we're almost there!"I told her as we climbed the stairs of a small building finally reaching the top. "Woah, this is amazing!"Korra said in awe of the view of the city during sunset. "You see that mural down there?" I asked and pointed and she nodded. "I actually painted that, I want to show what I saw when you looked deeper into the city"I explained to her and saw her eyes light up. "That's amazing and it's all artsy and stuff, I think you've got real talent"Korra said, struggling to make sense and I just chuckled. I turn to Korra and see her blush and say, "Well I was just experimenting, we should head to the arena Mako and Bolin have a match"I said to her, kinda disappointed. "Yeah I guess, let's go"Korra said, disappointed.

As me and Korra walk into the dressing room we see Mako and Bolin standing around looking super gloomy. "We didn't miss your match, did we? "Korra asked Mako who was sitting on the bench. "You guys look like you've lost already" I said, concerned for the bending brothers. "We might as well have" Bolin chimed in, "Hasook's a no good no show"Mako said angrily. Some guy said they have 2 minutes or they're disqualified and this is when I start to get irritated, but luckily before I could express it Korra came up with an idea, "I'm a top-notch waterbender if I do say so myself"Korra said offering to fill in for the team. I chuckled at her remark but it quickly faded,"But you're the avatar, wouldn't that count as cheating?"I ask trying to figure out how this would work if Korra was to compete. Korra then agreed to only use her waterbending but Mako continues to be his negative self, "No way I rather forfeit then look like a fool out there"Mako said naturally but in my eyes he's scared to take a risk. "Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence"Korra said sarcastically. "Just ignore him, I say we do it unless my vote doesn't count"I say looking at the boys to make a decision. The same guy comes in and Korra says that she's in and the match begins shortly after.

Now I admire Korra for her ambition but the first and second round of the match just went bad and it didn't help that when Korra got knocked out Tenzin was at the bottom platform waiting for her. I don't know what Tenzin and Korra talked about but the third round started and Mako and Bolin were cornered and Korra was at the edge of the platform but then she looked at me for a second, smirked and got her head in the came. Korra took a stance and I was honestly impressed that she was still in the game, but I wasn't the only one watching. In the corner of my eye I saw Tenzin and realized Korra was using the airbending technique for the moving panels, I even saw him cheer with me as they knocked out the entire team. I smiled when the audience started looking at him and he walked out of the arena.

After the match Korra went back to air temple island and I was about to turn in for the night. But Bolin and Mako stop me, "You know you don't have to be distant with her right?" Bolin said sitting up in his bed, "I don't know what you're talking about" I responded and turned over to try and sleep, "You're keeping secrets from her (Y/N), what happened to telling her?" Mako asked me and I was hoping to answer myself but I just couldn't. "I don't know, it's no secret I've changed, I don't know how she'll see it"I say reflecting on the past again. When I first got to the city I got into some long term trouble but I escaped it and now that Korra is here I don't know who to be. Mako and Bolin know some of what I went through but not all of it. "Look I'm sure when you explain it to her she'll still be your friend, goodnight guys we got training in the morning"Bolin said with a vote of positivity which is rare for me these days. "Goodnight" I said, finally able to close my eyes.

(Assault/Abuse mention starts)

I walked through the halls and stopped at a decorated door with flame like shapes and entered. A man was sitting at his desk. He glanced at me, "Phantom to what do I owe the pleasure?" He said as if we were friends. "I want out"I said and his whole behavior changed and he chuckled "Sorry kid but you've caused too much damage to my enemies to back out now and if you want to defy me come and try" He said standing from his desk taking a stance of firebending I recognized. I charge at him and he kicks the desk out the way I tackle him in a fit of anger and punch him repeatedly but he kicks me in the stomach sending me towards the wall. I see him about to lightning bend towards me and I dodge it last second, I open the door and run down the hallway as men run after me before I can reach the window to jump to the next building, a figure in a cloak stops me and grabs me by the collar of my shirt. It said,"You can't escape your darkness"In a distorted rough tone. Then I felt an extreme pain in my upper back and everything went black.
