Virgil was wrapped up like a burrito under his two duvets, it wasn't cold but he liked to have multiple. His eyelids were heavy as he started to drift off to sleep, only to suddenly jolt upright. His eyes wide and no longer tired,
"Holy shit, he called me hot"
Virgil thought back to the conversation he had with Roman before he left and how Roman called him hot. It was probably a joke in response to Virgil's comment, but why did that upset him? Did he want Roman to think he was attractive? Why?
Virgil knew that he wasn't going to be able to go to sleep now, not with all these questions and thoughts flooding his head. He climbed out of bed, taking one of his duvets with him wrapped around his shoulders, and carefully walked down the stairs, trying not to trip on his duvet cape. He immediately went to put the coffee machine on, his brain needed it's go fast juice if he wanted to sort through all this shit. Virgil made one cup and didn't bother putting milk in it and just took it like a shot, before making another one properly. He put it in a travel mug and slipped out into their small garden, making sure to leave a note for Thomas saying where he was, just in case.
He sat down in the middle of the garden, not caring about getting the duvet dirty as it needed a wash anyway, and tried to work through everything. And the best way to do that is to talk aloud to yourself and look insane.
"Okay Virgil, what do you know? Roman called me Hot Topic and then I responded with 'aww you think I'm hot' and without missing a beat he responded with 'yeah I do'. Did he actually mean it, or was it a joke in retaliation to your comment? And if he did mean it, does he mean it romantically or as a friend boosting your confidence? Urgh people are so difficult, this is why I avoid them!" Virgil paused to take a sip of his coffee, burning his tongue in the process, "ow shit. And then there's Thomas. He's gotten so attached to Roman's pack and he's got his friends and is in a good school, I can't move him again but I don't know how long we have here until we're found. I don't even know if he's still looking for us. This is no life for a kid, especially one as amazing as Thomas. But that's why you made an alliance with Roman, so if anything does happen, Thomas can stay here. They've all passed the tests you gave them these few months so you know you can trust them to raise Thomas. But that's not why you're thinking of leaving are you? You're not worried about him, you're scared because you've gotten attached, like a dumbass. This has nothing to do with Thomas, it's because you don't want to leave a certain redhead. Alright fine I admit it! I don't want to leave Roman."
Virgil stopped his argument with himself when he heard the backdoor slide open and the scent of chocolate and oranges hit his nose. He opened his arm to wrap the blanket around Thomas as well,
"Heya kid, you alright?"
Thomas hugged Virgil's torso the best he could and rested his head on Virgil's chest, "yeah, I could hear you muttering, and I saw your note"
"Oh sorry, I didn't mean to wake you"
He just shook his head and buried his face deeper into Virgil's chest. It was silent for a few minutes until Thomas timidly broke it,
"Are...are we leaving again?"
Virgil looked down and opened his mouth but Thomas beat him to it,
"Because I don't want to! I love it here! I love our house and my friends, and the town is really nice and pretty. There's also Roman's pack, they've been so nice to us and I know you like them too, it wouldn't be fair to leave them! Please don't make us leave!"
"Kid, breathe. You're not leaving, I promise"
"Okay...thank you Dad"
He gave a sombre smile, not that Thomas could see, and lightly kissed his son's head.
