I DIDN'T say anything to John B after I had calmed down, instead I just stood next to him with my eye peeled for marine patrol just incase the police had gotten a tip of us escaping on water. He held arm around my shoulders for comfort and I relaxed into my friends side. I was grateful he was here and that we were doing this together.
The two of us listened to the weather report through the radio on the boat as lightning cracked in the clouds above us.
"Weather advisory for Tropical Storm Danielle, expected to make landfall, in the Outer Banks and surrounding areas within the hour. Wind speeds are 65 miles per hour and rising—"
"—John B!"
My brows furrowed and I looked over at the docks we were passing, seeing a blonde girl running up one of them to us, "What?" I murmured in confusion.
"S-Sarah!" John B shouted and it was only then could I make her out clearly. She ran quickly down the long dock to us as we passed them on Figure Eight and I shook my head in disbelief.. how she'd managed to find us I would never know.
"John B, wait!" She shouted.
"Sarah!" He shouted to her again.
"Dude, pull over." I said to my friend hurriedly as he slowed the boat down, turning the wheel so we could get to the dock. Sarah was already waiting for the boat to stop and I held my hand out to help her on, "Hey."
She smiled weakly at me before hugging me unexpectedly. I froze for a minute before I wrapped my arms around her and accepted her bold gesture. It was strange, that was for sure, but knowing how much the two of us had gelled as friends made it feel all right. It was comforting and it was what I needed at the minute.
"I'm glad you're all right." She muttered to me.
I nodded into her shoulder as John B spoke to his girlfriend over my shoulder, "Hey. What are you doing?" He asked her, "I didn't think you were coming. You weren't at the dock."
Sarah and I pulled away from our hug and she walked over to John B slowly, cupping his cheek. I guess it wouldn't just be the two of us trying to mend our broken hearts, it would be them two together while I tried to mend my broken heart.
Third wheeling here I came.
She reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck, "You were just gonna leave without saying goodbye?" She asked him before pulling him in for a kiss after they chuckled. I turned away from their display of affection and busied myself looking at the docks on the back of the large houses that resided in Figure Eight.
"Never leave me again." Sarah murmured and the two kissed each other again.
It was awkward for me, standing with my back to them to one, give them privacy and two, because I didn't particularly want to see them kissing each other. I didn't want to see them happy when I felt so shit, as selfish as it sounded but it was true and it was the method behind my thinking at the moment.
I found myself looking up to the dark clouds that were blowing in from storm Danielle, they were darkening every time I looked at them and they made me anxious. If there was one thing my dad taught me about sailing that he stressed to me was that you should never sail on any body of water if there was a storm rolling in — no matter which direction it looked like it was heading in.
I was surprised my dad wasn't angry with me that I was out during a storm the day I slipped off Heyward's boat when we were looking for the Royal Merchant. While he wasn't mad with me though it really was a big 'I told you so' moment because it was dangerous and now I had the scar to prove it.
