"Rosie?" Nate's husky voice whispered. A feeling of sweet relief flowed through me. Only Nate called me Rosie.
Nate Jacobs towered over me at six foot four. He looked down at me with his deep chocolate brown eyes. He was covered in sweat, his almost black hair stuck to his forehead.
His eyes were full of outrage like he had been seeing red. But in a split second, it all faded. The look in his eyes was almost confusion. Nate was just as enchanting as he had ever been. Just the look of him took all the breath out of my body and replaced it with a burning feeling. I fought the overwhelming urge to run my finger along his smooth lower lip.
"It is you, right?" Nate said, his body was still unbearably close.
I had to force the words out. They almost got stuck in my throat. "Who else?"
A surprising smile spread across his face. "No fucking way." Nate pulled me into his arms, lifting me into a bear hug. He was crazy strong, be lifted me like I was a feather. I dug my face into his neck, he smelled like tequila and expensive cologne.
"What the fuck happened to you?" He once again checked me from head to toe. "You aren't my Rosie."
Once again he said my name, my knees were about to give out. He was still smiling, I felt like his smile could warm up a whole room.
"Shut up, I'm still Rose." I said, my eyes looking down at the floor.
Nate tucked a strand of long blonde hair behind my ear. "Still my Rose?"
All I could do was nod. My smile faded as I remembered what had just happened in the kitchen?
"Oh my god. You got a knife pulled on you! Are you okay?!" I gasped, twisting his arm to check him for cuts or blood.
He smiled a crooked smile, his crooked smile. "I'm fine. You know me, always starting shit."
Still, anger boiled in the back of me. I had always been as protective of Nate as he was of me. The thought of anything happening to him made me sick to my stomach.
I tried to laugh it off, but the feeling remained. "Do I want to know what happened?"
He shook his head, guilt was clear in his expression. "I really wish you hadn't seen that."
"It's okay." I assured him.
Truth was, the thought of Nate being violent didn't really bother me, nor did it bother me when I witnessed it, as long as he was the winning side. Though, no one would dare fight back. That's one of the reasons I could be so close with him, I knew he could protect me.
"Jules is fucking crazy." I commented. For half a second, the anger returned to Nate.
"Do you know her?" His tone was offensive, protective.
I shrugged, not wanting to upset him. "A little. I didn't know she was capable of threatening someone with a knife though."
"Be careful of that group, Rosie. They're all junkies." He whispered, there was a growl in the back of this throat. This was real warning.
I wanted to disagree with him but it didn't seem worth the effort. I wouldn't be seeing much of him outside of school, I predicted. "Okay."
Nate pulled my face up to his with the back of my neck. He was being gentle, something no one besides me expected. "Do you want to leave? I feel like I'm suffocating."
We hadn't spoken in two months and yet-- things just slipped back to the way things were before. His face was close that I could feel his breath on my lips. "Yeah, sure. But um, I drove Kat here."
He smiled, his eyes brightening even in the dark lighting. "Send her a quick text from the car." He grabbed my hand. "Come on."
