KIM. T

I straightened, reading Pyre’s face for any signs that he was deceiving us.

Either he was a damn good liar, or he was just as nervous as we were.

“What do you mean?” I questioned, trying to keep the alarm inside of me at bay.

“If the waterbenders find us here-” Pyre made a slicing motion across his throat with his finger. I frowned and threw a questioning look at Yoongi, which he returned.

I jolted when the screams began.

I spun on the cobblestone street to see the marketplace scurrying with frantic villagers as they tried to salvage their merchandise. The river tossed violently as waves swept the riverbank. Water crept towards the cobblestone streets, threatening to attack the merchants' booths.

I turned to the others. “We need to get away from here. Now.” I rushed, dragging Pyre by the arm as Yoongi and Seokjin followed behind me. Jeon squirmed in the crook of my elbow as we quickly made our way toward the acropolis.

“Hey Kim, put me down so I can change back,” Jeon demanded.

“Jeon, there is no possible worse time for this!” I exclaimed. “Wait until we get somewhere safe.”

“But-”

“No,” I firmly denied. I held him a little closer to me as we ran toward the first sturdy building we saw; an inn with a faded banner that read καθαρό αίμα μόνο.

Pure blood only.

I ignored it as I pressed my hand to push the door open.

Hey! We can’t go in there,” Yoongi hissed as he shot me a glare.

“Like hell we can’t,” I growled quietly, I dragged the men inside and jogged up to the front table despite Yoongi’s protests. Pyre was oddly silent and obedient, and every few seconds I threw a glance back at him to be sure he was still there.

Even he was a little scared.

I booked us into a decent sized room, which cost way more than I wanted to bargain for. Nevertheless, I extended my hand palm-up to expose the inside of my wrist so the clerk could scan my chip.

“Alright, would you like to charge that to your government or personal account?”

I contemplated for a moment, trying to calculate how much of an allowance we had left on the government account.

“Personal,” I reluctantly replied, I rolled my sleeve back down and shoved my hand in my pocket. Jin released a barely audible gasp from behind me, and I threw him a look over my shoulder.

He had taken Jeon from me and held him in both arms like a child with their dearest stuffed animal. He lightly scratched the top of the bunny’s head, and though Jeon didn’t complain he shot me an annoyed glare when I turned. At least, as close as a bunny could get to a glare.

Pyre was oblivious to all this, as he was too busy scanning our surroundings, likely in an attempt to plan an escape.

We hurried to our room as quickly as possible to avoid being recognized as mortals and mutants, and though it seemed we had been undetected I was still a little uneasy. One woman we had passed in particular, left her gaze on us a little longer than I would have liked, and I wasn’t sure if she was suspicious or if she was just staring because two of us were in uniform.

Once we reached our room, the price began to make more sense.

This room was nicer than any I’d ever stayed in in a mortal or mixed-blood hotel. The walls and floor were immaculate, all the linens clean and neatly pressed. The room held three large beds, all piled with soft-looking pillows and tucked with silk sheets. On the far side of the room, a large window overlooked the village and allowed the greyish natural light to flood the room. The far corner of the room was inhabited by the newest model of the Cleir air filtration system, which hummed quietly as it circulated clean air throughout the room. A large portion of the wall opposite the beds was occupied by a screen for ordering room service, accessing broadcasts, and watching videos.
