Charli's POV
Hours later, I found Dixie, cuddled into Griffin's side, watching him stream his video game.
"Dixie, I need to talk to you."
"Not now, runt, we're playing Fortnite."
Griffin laughed, thumbs smashing the buttons on the controller.
"Dixie Jane, I will call mom right now."
"God, Charli, could you be more of a buzz kill?" she snapped, standing up from the couch.
"Yes," I said, pulling her out of the room.
She followed me into my room, Avani and Larray nowhere to be found.
"What the fuck are you doing?"
"Having fun, not like you're helping."
"What about Addison?"
"What about her?"
I glared at her, and she glared back, challenging me.
I pressed on. "You know exactly what I mean."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You said that—"
"Charli!" she yelled. "Can you just let me be happy?"
I sighed. "I want you to be happy, Dix. I just don't know what's going on with you."
"Nothing's going on. I'm hanging out with the guy I like. Why is that such a big fucking deal."
"Because your best friend is in your room having waited a week to see you and you ditched her to hang out with stupid Griffin."
Her fists balled and her eyes got even angrier.
"I didn't ditch ANYONE. She ditched ME."
"At least you acknowledge who we're talking about."
"Can you get out of my business? What did Nicki Minaj say about staying in your lane."
"Don't reference the queen while we're fighting."
She rolled her eyes, unimpressed.
"Since when do you like Griffin?"
"Since I kissed him during spin the bottle and he took me on a date."
"Dixie..."
She looked tired, anger falling from her face.
"You're my sister. And I want you to be happy."
"Well, I am happy," she mumbled.
I looked at her, unconvinced. "I still think you have some things to figure out."
"I have my whole life to figure my shit out. I don't care. I just want to have fun." She walked around me, heading for the door.
"Dixie," I said. "Are you listening to me?"
"I heard you, little sister. Thanks for the great advice," I could hear the sarcasm in her tone, but she was already walking out the door and down the hall.
Addison's POV
Dixie slammed the door of our room open.
"We need to talk."
"Okay," I said hopefully. Her face was emotionless.
I stood up as she walked into the room.
Neither of said anything, unsure of where to start.
She took a deep breath. "I didn't know you were coming back last night."
That's obvious, I thought.
"And I need to tell you something."
"What?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
She paused. "Griffin and I... We're together."
"I'm... happy for you."
"You are?"
No, I thought, I've never felt so unhappy.
"Yes."
She looked at me for a long moment.
"I'm glad you came back."
I didn't respond, sitting down on the edge of my comforter.
She stood awkwardly, looking at the photos on my wall.
"And I missed you too," she said, still not looking at me. "I'm sorry for being a bitch this morning. I don't want you to leave again."
I looked at my hands, my chest feeling tight.
"Can we just—Do you want to come to Dunkin with me? I'm getting Charli her favorite."
I shook my feelings down, suppressing the urge to scream.
She finally turned to look at me, eyes searching mine.
"Are you still my best friend?" I whispered.
The pain in my chest was radiating into the air, filling the room.
"Of course I am. Are you mine?"
I don't want to be your friend. I want to kiss your lips.
"Yes."
"Come on. I'll buy you an iced green tea."
