[eddie's pov]

i stuffed my hands into my suit's pants pockets as i tuned out the tour guide in front of me, just paying attention to the important parts. i'm still a bit iffy if this school really fits christopher.

i was snapped back into reality when the guide asked when to set a family interview.

"i'm sorry?"

"oh, christopher's terrific," she explained. "we have your information, all we need now is to meet mrs.diaz. that won't be a problem, will it?"

i waited until carla and i moved to somewhere more secluded. "no it's definitely a problem."

"look, i know christopher's mother is a touchy subject with you, but i'm sure as we explain the situation to principal summers we can find a work around," carla tried to reassure me. "do you have a copy of the custody agreement?"

i looked down at my feet, not knowing that trying to get chris into a good school would arise this many problems.

"there isn't one," carla gave me a confused look. "we're still married."

i heard the knocking on my door that i dreaded so much, praying that i wouldn't do anything stupid and that the conversation would go smoothly. i opened up the door to see her there, shannon, looking better than i last saw her.

"hi," i sucked in a breath of air, hoping to calm my nerves.

"hi," shannon replied back. i moved out the way and extended my arm, letting her in before i shut the door. she must've interpreted it wrong and came in for a hug, which felt more awkward than anything, not comforting in the least.

"thanks for coming.."

"yeah."

i showed her around the house, and lastly to chris' room. shannon took it all in slowly, picking up a picture of me and him. she sat down, laughing with joy as she saw how much he grew.

"he's gotten so big," her hand covered her smiling face, but i could still see her grin peeking through. "has...has he asked about me?"

"not in a while, he has a lot to keep him busy though. the move, new school, new city, new people."

"sure, sure," she nodded her head. "yeah, he must've been shocked when you said you were leaving texas.

"i sure was when you called yesterday," she shrugged at me bitterly.

"shannon.." i rolled my head, not wanting to have this conversation turn sour.

"so, tell me about this school."

i plopped the pamphlets and other forms in front of her. "they want to meet you, well they need to meet you. it's a requirement for admission."

"it looks...fancy," shannon said as she flipped through one of the booklets. "not the kind of place i thought you'd be into."

i explained to her how it's a great school for chris to attend, especially the art studio. he'd have so much fun there.

"-can i?... see him?" her question threw me off my rambling. "i mean, this is a big step. switching schools when he just got here. maybe i could talk to him? make sure it's what he wants."

i slowly shook my head, fearing where this was going. "i don't think that's a good idea, it... it might confuse him."

"what's confusing? i'm his mom-"
