Dex awoke to the rustling in the closet. He slowly opened his, letting them adjust to the bright streams of sunlight that crept into the large bedroom. "Biana?", he grumbled slowly sitting up and rubbing his eyes.
Biana stuck her head out of the closet and replied in a cheery voice, "Good Morning!" She grabbed two dresses from inside, one was a royal blue gown with small jewels set into the long netted sleeves and neckline. The other one was blush pink and was less gown-like with short off-shoulder sleeves. It was more form-fitting, with a flowy chiffon skirt and flowers embroidered across. "Which one looks better for the council meeting?"
"Blue.", Dex mumbled, still half-asleep.
"I think so too." Biana said, studying the dresses carefully. "Yes. Definitely blue. Dex? Dex! Wake up!"
"I'm awake.", Dex moaned from under the covers.
"Then get ready! We have to get the kids to school in an hour, and get out of the house too!", Biana cried in exasperation.
"Okay! Okay!" Dex said slowly slinking out of bed and trudging to the bathroom.
Biana turned back to her closet and held both dresses against herself in the mirror as she muttered, "Definitely blue."
Blue demanded attention and looked regal, but the pink was really pretty...she'd save it for date night since Dex forgot a dress pretty quickly. With a quick nod to herself, she set out a pair of trousers, a tunic, jerkin, and a fancy blazer for Dex. She laid both outfits on the bed and headed to wake up her children Ayla and Kenric.
Biana gave Ayla's bedroom door a quick knock, and heard Ayla call, "Come in!"
Biana pushed the door open to reveal...a disaster zone. Her 12 year old's generally messy room had taken on a whole new level-clothes were spewed all over Alya's bedroom. Her desk had large textbooks and novels marked and stacked in funny looking piles. Even the chandelier that hung from the midnight blue ceiling had clothes hanging from it. In the middle of it all was Ayla, stuffing her school stuff in a backpack. Biana's jaw fell open, "What on earth!"
"So last friday in ability DE-" Ayla began but a swift breeze flung out of her arm, pushing her back against the wall where she crumpled up on the floor as she fell.
"You're a guster!" Biana exclaimed, rushing to her daughter's side.
"Stay away mom! I don't want to hurt you!" Ayla said, feeling the flowy energy building up in her palms.
"Let me help you!" Biana said coming behind Ayla and wrapping her arms around her, to prevent being blown away again.
"Mom! Let go, I'm gonna blow!" Ayla shrieked, trying to escape her mother's arms.
"Calm down! I can use my Exilium training."
Dex, who had heard all the commotion, burst through the door, "Is everyone ok? What's wrong Ayla? Biana?"
"Dad watch out!" Ayla screamed as another huge gust escaped from her hands. Dex tried to dodge the gust, but was too slow and got hit square in the stomach, and was flung out of the room. He got blasted so hard that he shot over the overhang of the upper floor into the foyer. Luckily, he caught himself with levitation before he hit the ground.
Biana's eyes were wide as she braced for the crash, but it never came. Ayla just shrieked, "DAAAAAAAD!"
"I'm okay!" Dex yelled once he'd recovered from the shock.
Both Ayla and Biana took a relieved breath, as Kenric who'd just watched his dad being flung off the top floor screeched, "What. The. Heck. Are you ok!"
"I'm fine guys! Ayla you're a guster?" Dex called up, coming up the stairs.
"Apparently so?" Alya said, now a bit more calm and in control. "I don't know how to make it stop!"
"Try calming down. A lot of Gusters have the same problem when they manifest." Biana stroked Ayla's hair, calming her small trembling.
"I just feel the wind around me, almost like it wants me to play with it, and then it won't leave me alone!" Ayla flung her arms up in the air in frustration causing another draft of wind to lightly flow around the room.
"Do your professors know about your manifestation?" Dex asked, running a hand down his face.
"No," Ayla admitted.
"When did you find out you were a guster?" Biana questioned.
"Yesterday..." Ayla mumbled.
"Why didn't you tell us then?" Dex came up to kneel in front of Ayla.
"I was just hoping that if I pretended that if I hadn't manifested, I could keep taking the ability detecting class and I could maybe manifest a different ability." Ayla looked down to her hands, watching the little wisps of wind swirling around her palms. "Gusters are useless. They just control wind! I want to have vanishing, or technopathy, or telepathy, or something cool!"
"But gusters are cool! You get to move the wind, and I bet with some training you could find other ways to use your talent as well." Biana smiled.
"Like what?" Ayla narrowed her eyes, closing her fists into balls that blocked the swirls of wind.
"Like you could part water with wind if you learned to control it. Or maybe learn to lift yourself with wind! But you'll only be able to learn all these tricks if you practice with a mentor." Biana explained.
"Maybe."
"You know, I felt the same way when I manifested as a technopath." Dex added.
"You did?" Ayla looked shocked.
"Yup. Like you, I wanted to manifest as something cool and interesting. But as I learned more through ability training, I learned that there is so much that I can do with this power, and you'll learn the same when you start to practice as well.
"Who's going to be my mentor?" Ayla asked, her face filling with excitement.
"We can ask during the council meeting today." Biana smiled, running her fingers over Ayla's messy hair. "Now come on, you need to change into your school uniform."
"Ohh, I forgot. Today's midterms." Ayla grumbled, tossing aside her bag and heading to her closet. "I hate my uniform. The cape looks so weird."
"We all went through it." Dex said with a wink.
"Yeah, but it's not very stylish." Biana added, looking slightly repulsed as she remembered her days in those wretched uniforms.
"Mom, we all know that to be happy you need to be wearing a gown with lots of sparkles, or at least a tunic in the highest of couture fashion." Kenric laughed as Biana shrugged, turning a little pink in the cheeks.
"Nothing wrong with having a little style." Biana argued, crossing her arms.
"Uh huh," Kenric commented. "I wouldn't say that's a little though." He pointed to her blue gown that glowed with the small twinkling jewels.
"Well today me and your father are going to the council meeting, which is why I'm dressing a little more formal than usual." Biana noted.
"Wait, you're going to the council meeting?" Ayla asked, jumping a little on her heels."Today?"
"Uh-huh. Why do you seem so surprised?" Dex asked.
"Well, it is midterms today..."
"It won't take long and I'm sure this isn't an assignment based thing. Just a follow up." Biana said, giving a sidelong glance at Dex.
"Ok. I'm just so nervous." Ayla ran her fingers through her hair, the hair softly blowing in the light streams that rustled it.
"I'm sure you'll do great sweetie!" Biana said with a smile, "You too Kenric."
"I sure hope so." Kenric said.
"Both of you'll do great, I'm sure." Dex said, pulling his whole family in for a hug.
Aww...so sweet, and safe...But is safety a promise? Muh-hahahaha! Foreshadowing-ing-ing-ing...
