I envied Katie more than I ever imagined, although Chris wasn't my cup of tea, each morning she got to wake up next to the one she loved, it was taken for granted, whereas for Daniel and me this was a very limited luxury. Although we were going to spend the next two weeks together, we were not going to be alone for the fortnight. Daniel had promised his parents he would visit for a couple of days, so on Saturday morning I was packing a bag for my long weekend.
"Are you sure it's ok if I come with you? You have told your parents you've invited me haven't you?" I asked apprehensively
"For the tenth time yes, what's wrong with you?" he said whilst wrapping his arms around my waist and tugging me so I was held tight.
"Nothing, I'm just checking, what if they don't like me?" A giant smile beamed across his face and he quietly laughed at my insecurities.
"They will love you; I'm not just saying that they will. My mum couldn't stand Tina so she already likes you. Besides what would it matter if they didn't like you, I wouldn't care if your family hated me; I only need you to love me, not them." As he finished he lifted my chin and I stretched up and quickly touched my lips to his, sensing my retreat he held me closer and his mouth came down stronger on mine, we kissed for only a second before my mind registered what he had said about his mum and I pulled away
"Why didn't your mum like Tina?" Even I could hear the slight tinge of panic in my voice, he was again smiling broadly.
"She thought Tina wasn't good enough for her little boy."
"Oh God, you're making me feel worse, she's going to hate me." And despite needing him to dispel my anxiety, he was instead laughing heartily at me and enjoying watching me fret far too much.
"Stop laughing at me, this isn't any kind of reassurance." He continued chuckling but at least it was now interspersed with kisses.
"Calm down, she knows how important you are to me; if anything she'll be worried that if you don't like them you'll never let me go home again."
"I wouldn't do that, so you've spoken to your mum about us?" Clearly tired of my constant interruptions and chatter he had moved his lips down to my neck and gently caressed it in between the words of his reply, each brush of his warm lips on my skin radiated a soothing pulse throughout my body and I could feel my angst dissipating.
"Well of course I had to tell her you were coming with me for Easter and inevitably she asked me about you. She was actually relieved I'd finally gotten rid of Tina; I've told you she'll love you just for that reason. Now enough talk about my mum, firstly it's killing my mood and secondly there are much better things we could be doing with this time."
It was lunchtime on Easter Saturday and before heading to the station for the three hour journey to Daniel's home town we grabbed some lunch. Almost all the students had gone home for the holidays, apart from us there were a couple of boys from the ground floor dorm left but besides that the place was empty. The usually vibrant buzz of the place had been replaced with an eerie silence. In the kitchen our voices echoed round the empty room.
"So I've told my mum we are only staying till Tuesday, so it's only for a few days is that ok?" Although it was a question I knew it was more of a statement.
"Yeah that's fine, we can stay for longer if you want to" I offered.
"NO!" His instant, snap reply made me smile, "I want to spend this time with you, just you; a couple of days are enough, plenty in fact." As he spoke he looked at me, all humour was gone from his face but I could see he was intently looking at my face and into my eyes. As I stared back at him I could see he loved me, I don't know what it was I saw in his face, perhaps it was something in his eyes? I don't know but I knew at that moment he loved me. I felt my cheeks blush as I knew I had looked at him that way for weeks if not months.
