With my sweaty running clothes strewn across the bathroom floor I stood under the hot shower hoping to wash away all memory of the last couple of minutes. If Chris hadn't ambled out towards the driveway I could possibly have still been there open mouthed and gawping at Daniel, incredulity and a not at all flattering expression fixed on my face. All those years of thinking Chris was a tosser had been erased from my brain, for now he was my saviour. Ripping my hand out of Daniel's grasp I made a hasty retreat, pushing passed Chris as I bolted for the stairs and the sanctuary of my bathroom, where I'd stayed ever since.
As the water pelted my face I could feel my skin was still flushed from the acute embarrassment Daniel had just caused me, the beet red burning which had engulfed my entire head as his words hung in the air between us and his jade green eyes almost seared into my soul, had not yet subsided. 'Get a grip' I told myself, 'You're over reacting' I again chastised, ' He didn't mean anything by it, he was probably just trying to be nice, maybe apologise' I reasoned with myself.
I berated myself for letting him get to me, and more significantly for letting him know he got to me. As I watched my skin prune under the heat and pressure of the water I resolved to 'man up' and get out of the shower, I couldn't after all hide in there forever...I kind of had a busy day and Katie would kill me if I was late and messed with her rigid preparation schedule. She had planned the entire day down to the minute; I smiled to myself as I wrapped the towel tightly around my body as I thought of her negotiating with the priest the length of time he had to deliver his sermon. I hoped for his sake he stuck to his allotted window of time, because priest or not he wouldn't be able to hide behind God when Katie got her hands on him for messing with her schedule.
After blow drying my hair I left to down knowing the hairdresser would style it in whatever way Katie had decided she wanted for us. I put on the new and very expensive underwear I had bought especially for today before picking out my favourite pair of jeans and a white blouse which I knew matched perfectly and which I knew extenuated my positives and disguised my negatives. 'Well' I thought, 'might as well look my best; make sure he really knows how much of a mistake he made.'
It was a little after eleven when I made it back down to the kitchen, I had already put everything I needed into the car so I was good to go there was just a couple of things I needed to check before I left. Spotting Mark and Greg in the back garden I headed out to them.
"So Mark" I began, all pleasantries gone I was all business now. "The cars are arriving at 2:00pm, so make sure you and Chris are ready, okay?" He nodded his reply.
"Good, now there are cans in the fridge and I've left a couple of bottle of champagne for a toast, but don't let him get pissed, I mean it" I warned, wagging my finger at him before continuing.
"Now have you got the rings?"
"Yeah they're in my top pocket" he confirmed nonchalantly, but I wasn't taking any chances
"Show me" I ordered, not bothering to argue he rooted in his inside pocket and pulled them out for me to inspect before secreting them back into their temporary home.
"Oooh you're still just as domineering as ever." Greg chipped in, his tone thick with suggestion. "And it's even more sexy than I remember" he teased; I didn't bother to reply I raised my eyes to the heavens and shock my head in disapproval.
"Now don't be like that" he added walking over to me and draping his arm around my shoulder before letting it slip down my back to rest on my behind for a second, then flashing me his dazzling smile he patted it and smirked cheekily at me.
"Greg remove your hand or I will rip it off" I did my best to hold my glare but Mark's sniggers broke my resolve and I was just starting to crack when a familiar voice cut through our intimate banter.
