The Last Night (flashback)

"Hold still Lily!" Ellie shouts at me as she continues to draw in her journal.

"I'm trying, but I'm bored now."

"I'm almost done just stay still for a few more minutes." Ellie tells me. I sigh and continue to hold still. I watch her with a soft smile on my face as she concentrates on her drawing. I don't know why she insisted on drawing me, but I decide not to fight Ellie. She's extremely stubborn so it's better to just not. And anyways, I get a good view at her drawing which I love. She's always so concentrated it's cute. After a few more minutes Ellie smiles and puts down her pencil, "Okay, done." I crawl over next to her and look at the drawing.

"This is really good Ellie." I tell her as I stare at the drawing. She doesn't reply as I keep looking at it. I don't really think much about how I look, but from Ellie's point of view I look... good. I don't know how she made me look better, yet the same, or how just in this hour she was able to draw me this detailed, "Thank you." I tell her as she smiles sheepishly at me. I see red tinge her cheeks, but I don't think much about it. Ellie still isn't the best with compliments. I hand the journal back to Ellie and lean my head against the back of the wall and face Ellie. She mimics my actions but faces me.

"So I noticed Adam and Alaina are getting pretty close." Ellie tells me.

"Yeah. I think they like each other, but they're pretty oblivious to it so I think there will still be some time until they get together."

Ellie nods at me, "Yeah people can be pretty oblivious to feelings." I just look at her and she looks back. Her face looks all over mine, and I look at hers. Her hair is starting to fall out in front of her face and I have to hold myself back from pushing it out of the way. I look at the scar on her eyebrow, she told me it was from an old fight but never went into details on it.

Then I kiss Ellie. Her eyes widen in shock, but she quickly recovers and slowly kisses back. We stay in this position until Ellie jumps back.

"Shit I shouldn't have done that!" She exclaims, "Fuck what if I infected you?" She starts panicking and I go over to calm her down, "don't touch me!" I jump back away from her. She keeps muttering 'fuck' as she runs out of my room.

"Ellie!" I start to chase after her but Ellie's already got a head start. By the time I get downstairs to the front door, it's already wide open with Ellie out of sight.

The next few days I spend trying to look for Ellie so we can talk, but I never see her, and if I do she's gone as soon as I spot her. The next time I see her she's talking to Cat with a big smile on her face. I don't know Cat well, but one thing I do know is that she really likes Ellie. Maybe Ellie doesn't like me.

I decide to head back and get some food from Seth's. On the way there I run into Evan. Like actually run into him, "Whoa there, you okay?" Evan grabs onto my shoulders to steady me.

"Yeah sorry. Thanks." I tell him. Evan isn't someone I know very well, but as someone who has been in Jackson for a while we are acquaintances. He gives me a nice smile.

"No problem Lily. Where are you heading off to?"

"Just going to grab some food from Seth's. You can join if you want?"

"Yeah sure." I nod at Evan and we head to Seth's. When we get there we flow into a conversation. Evan is known to be a jokester so he makes me laugh a lot.

"So um I know we don't exactly know each other very well, but I was wondering if you wanted to go out some time. Maybe get some food?" Evan asks me.

"We're getting food right now."

"I know but this is more friendly. I was thinking next time it could be, uh, I don't know more in a romantic way." I look at Evan as he asks me this. I can't lie and say that I don't think Evan is attractive, cause he is, but I don't know what's going on with Ellie right now.

"Uh I don't know Evan. Can I get back to you on that?" I ask him and he gives me a nod still keeping a smile on his face. We finish up eating and go our separate ways. When I say bye to him he gives me a hug, I return it, but when I look over his shoulder I see Ellie. I follow her once I left to see if she will finally talk to me.

"Ellie! Ellie wait up!" I call to her but she just keeps walking. I have to start running to catch up to her. When I finally do I touch her shoulder and she shrugs my hand off, "Ellie hey come on talk to me." she doesn't reply to me and just walks away.

It's been weeks since mine and Ellie's kiss and she still isn't talking to me. I don't understand why. Sure I get the point now- she doesn't like me, but I never thought that she also didn't like me as a friend anymore. If I knew this would happen I would have never kissed her. I once again see her so I try to talk to her again.

"Ellie. Come on talk to me. I'm sorry about the kiss it didn't mean anything, but can you talk to me." That was a lie. It did mean something, but if I have to say this so she will talk to me again I will. Ellie just looks at me and walks away. I feel tears run down my face and I don't really know what to do. I guess Ellie and I are done.

After a few more weeks of Ellie ignoring me I go up to Evan, "Hey Evan. If you still want that dinner, I would love to do it." Evan gives me a big smile and a hug. Asking if I'm free tonight. I nod at him and walk away.

At the dinner it is going well. Evan is just an easy person to talk to so we don't have any awkward moments. He's telling me a story of when he took down a dozen infected with his brother. I think he's trying to impress me, but I don't really know. It's not like I've actually been on a date before. Soon dinner ends and he walks me back to my place. I wave bye to him and am about to leave when he pulls me back and kisses me. I kiss back for a second before moving away. He smiles at me.

"You know I really like you Lily. I have for a while... would you maybe want to be my girlfriend?" Evan asks. I watch him for a little bit trying to think of an answer. I do like Evan. He's really funny and nice, but I don't know. I think over time I could really like him, so I nod at him and he kisses me again. When I get inside I close the door and lean on it.

I'm sure I can really like him after some time.

Authors Note:

I just want to stress that in these flashbacks, and really even in present time, they're still young and don't always make the best choices especially when it comes to dating (as both Ellie and Lily are showing lol). The flashbacks are really to show that they are young and figuring about who you like, especially when it's the same gender and your best friend, is challenging and I hope it comes across this way :) it's also just fun to write all the flashbacks and backstory
