CHAPTER FOURTY EIGHT

I stared across the room. Probably looking like a massive stalker. I took a deep breath and took a step forward before I stopped. "I can't do it." I whispered. "He hates me Sam."

"He doesn't hate you." She replied. I gave her a long look. Sam and I stood at our usual spot near the lockers.

"You didn't see him Sam." My eyes stayed on Caleb and Oliver across the room. They were talking and laughing with a bunch of the basketball team. "The way he looked at me..."

My voice trailed off when Saturday night flashed through my eyes.

"Why are you running away?" I cried. "Are you really that disgusted?"

He gave a harsh laugh, the noise had made me flinch inside. "I AM NOW! I THOUGHT THAT WE WERE FRIENDS!." He backed away, towards his car. I watched his hands start to shake while my whole body turned cold. "STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ME ALLEY SANDERS!"

"Alley?" I snapped back into present and stared at Sam.

"You didn't see." I swallowed back the lump in my throat. "Maybe Mel was right and he was in on it with Mel."

Suddenly Sam started to shake me, "Are you serious! Do not listen to her. Haven't you learnt your lesson from her?"

"But-" My voice shook because she wouldn't stop shaking me.

"But nothing!" She practically yelled. "She's obviously messing with you."

"You still didn't hear him. I don't know what she told him Sam. I think that she told him that I had feelings for him... he had this really disgusted look on his face..." I sighed, "I wish I knew what she told him...or what type of game shes playing."

"Ask him Alley." Sam insisted.

"What would I say?" I muttered.

"He's obviously so clouded with anger that he doesn't see that she's messing with him. You must have done something to piss him off."

Was it something she said to him?

"I don't know.." My voice trailed off. "It might have been Blake, I think that Mel might have told him my feelings, he knew I thought it was him I was kissing and was disgusted." I pursed my lips. "I can't face him and think that that's the reason."

"Well, you'll never know unless you ask." Sam gave me a shove towards them. It was in that instant that Caleb's eyes snapped towards mine.

They turned cold.

My heart turned cold.

"Great, awkward eye contact." I muttered.

"Now you have to go over." Sam pushed me again, this time though I almost fell forward. I gave her an dirty look.

Now that he was staring at me, I had to go over.

Or not... Caleb glared at my direction. With each step, I wanted to turn around and run.

Though I stood my ground and stopped in front of the group of basketballers. As if feelings the tension, they all stopped talking. Who am I kidding? China could feel this tension.

"I'll catch up with you guys." Caleb said in a dead and lifeless voice. His eyes didn't leave mine, even when his team mates left silently. Once they were gone though, that voice turned cold with snarl. "What are you doing? Didn't I make myself clear Saturday night?"

"I want to know what I did Caleb.... please, why do you hate me?" I sounded like desperate plead.

"You know exactly why." He muttered. "You knew Alley and I trusted you."

"Knew what!" I practically screamed.

Suddenly, a smirk covered his lips. I had never seen that smile before.

And I never wanted to again.

It was sarcastic and mean, it turned my whole body cold with fear. Caleb shook his head while smiling like THAT. "Don't play dumb Alley, Mel told me everything."

"Caleb please." I whispered. "I don't know what you're talking about. I just want things to be the way they were. I want you to be my best friend again."

A flash of sadness crossed his features before he whipped it with another head shake. "Were not friends Alley." His voice dropped. "You never were a friend to me." I sucked in a breath and felt tears well in my eyes. "Don't speak to me again." He added in a low voice.

If there was one sound in the world that annoyed me the most- it was that high pitched squeal. Anger slowly built up inside of me as I slammed my locker closed.

I stormed towards Mel, bumping anyone who dared to get in my way. I was like Moses or something, because everyone parted.

I clutched the fabric tightly in a fist till I shoved it towards Mel. "Happy birthday, you win."

She stared at me, surprised. Till that expression was replaced with a trademark smirk. "My birthday isn't for another couple of weeks but thank you." She gripped the cheerleaders uniform in her hand. "Best present I could ever receive."

I rolled my eyes and turned away but stopped when her hand reached out towards me, "I can't possibly win yet Sanders, I'm not even finished."

I didn't turn around but harshly shrugged her hand away. "I am." I walked away, feeling their eyes on me.

Best decision of my life.

"Hey Sanders! Have you tried talking to him yet!" She yelled towards me.

That did it.

My vision doubled when I turned back around and stormed towards her. Ignoring the posse around her, I shoved Mel towards the lockers. It created a loud BANG, followed by silence. Her posse gave a loud gasp. "What did you tell him?" I said in a low voice.

Mel's eyes widened, she pushed me away. I stumbled backwards. "Don't fall A, you might bleed to death." She hissed. "You are so going to pay for that."

"What did you tell him?" I demanded. "Does he know that I thought he was Blake?"

She shook her head. "A game player never reveals her secrets A."

"Wow." I breathed and took a step back. "You really are mental." My eyes scanned the popular group around her. "Do you really listen to that?"

"They listen to me because I'm the one who made them who they are- popular." She glared at me. "You wanted that."

"At what price?" I realised. "For you to change me? and make me like you?" My eyes snapped towards the cheerleaders but on a particular person- Sophia. "Is that what you really want? Or would you rather real friends." My eyes flickered towards Mel. "Who don't play games."

In that moment, Sophia smiled at me and took a step forward. It was like there was an invisible line crossed between them and us. Mel glared at her, "You don't know what you're doing Sophia. This is social suicide."

"No, it's the right choice." She glared back at her. "Alley's right. I deserve better friends then you."

Sienna stared at her with shock. "What the hell are you doing?"

Sophia linked her arm with mine. "Come on." Though after pulling me a few steps, she turned around. "You should know that I was also in on it as well Mel. I encouraged them to try and get you out of this school, I even helped."

"Why?" Mel hissed.

"I'm not scared of you anymore Mel. I'm sick of you controlling and destroying my life." Her eyes ran around the cheerleaders. "If you were smart, you'd do the same thing."

"Take one step forward." Mel said, "And your life will be over." She glared at me, "You're going down for this Sanders."

"I can't believe that that just happened." Sophia breathed. "I can't believe I just did that... I should apologise and beg for forgiveness."

Sam and I automatically grabbed an arm and pulled her away from the doors. "What's done is done." Sam insisted. "You don't need her."

"How am I going to face her?" Sophia cried. "She's going to make my life a living hell."

"No." I said, "She's going to make my life a living hell."

"Then yours." Sam continued.

"Your right." Sophia nodded. "I have time to run away."

I laughed. "You're not running away."

"How do you this?" She demanded. "Knowing that she's plotting her revenge on you right this moment?"

I stared at her blankly, "I don't usually think about that. But thank you." I added sarcastically, "Can you tell me what Mel said to Caleb?"

She shook her head, "Sorry I wasn't at Blake's." She pursed her lips. "Plus whatever happened, it seems to be between Hayden, Blake and Mel. She hasn't talked about it... usually she likes to brag about that stuff."

"Great." I sighed, "Anyways, I'm off."

Sophia suddenly clutched my arm. "What! You can't leave me! We have lunch next! Where are you going?! I'm coming!"

I frowned and held back  my smile with a lip bite. "To the library."

"This school has a library?" She frowned.

Sam snicked but shut up when I elbowed her in the stomach. "Yeah, it does. I just need to catch up on some homework." I gave her a look. "You'll be fine. Just sit with Sam."

"Oh." Disappointment flashed clearly along her face. "OK."

"Geesh, I'm not that bad." Sam held onto Sophia's arm and dragged her towards the door.

I smiled to myself but it soon vanished when I walked towards the library. That was an understatement- 'some homework.' Ever since I've been focusing on Mel, my whole education has suffered with laziness.

Especially with exams coming up- I was doomed.

I sat in the library, near the back. I hardly noticed him when I first sat down and organised my books around me. Though I looked up at the awkward noise he made. Staring at his face though, the last day before break flashed in my mind.

Fred a kid in front of me and Sam's desk started smashing a paper sword into another's next to him. Blake noticed, obviously not hearing my comment and leaned forward towards him "Hey geek this isn't dungeons and dragons, stop embarrassing yourself." He laughed.

Fred ignored him.

"Blake why are you such an ass?" I hissed. "If the kid wants to play with a sword, then let him."

I snapped out of my daze, that had felt like a life time ago. "Hey Fred." I smiled.

"H-hey." He stuttered.

"How have you been?"

"Good." He replied. Fred ducked his head when a flame of red heated his cheeks. Once I realised that he was'nt going to say anything else, I started on my maths.

After working on it for about ten minutes, I gave a loud groan and banged my head against the desk. "Ugh, I don't get this at all."

"You're good at maths." I snapped my eyes towards Fred and he blushed.

"I used to be good at maths." I sighed. "Then I became too caught up in my social life."

"Right." He muttered, Fred looked at me shyly. "I could help you if you want me to?" There was something about Fred that reminded me of a scared squirrel or something.

I smiled brightly, "That would be great! Thank you!"

He looked at me, shocked. "Really?"

I nodded, "Of course."

Fred showed me the equations and the way that they were done. By the end, it was like a small piece of weight had been lifted from shoulders.

"I don't know how to thank you." I smiled at him and stood up. "I'd be dead with out you're help."

"That's a little over exaggerated." Fred smiled back sheepishly and pressed his glasses towards his face.

"Anything you need OK?" I collected my books. "I mean it." I piled my books in my arms, almost walking away. I didn't notice the small battle that Fred was having inside his head.

"U-uh Alley." He muttered. "There is something."

I stopped and smiled. "Sure, what is it?"

"I-I was wondering i-f y-you..." Poor kid is struggling, the rest came out in a confused mess. "Wantedtogotothedancewithme?"

I blinked. "Oh." Fred was glowing a bright red.

"Don't worry." He looked down. "I understand if you don't want to..."

"I just wasn't exactly planning on it..." I licked my lips and stared at him.

Fred nodded, "It's OK.."

Maybe I had a soft heart or something because Fred's face suddenly turned really sad, like a lost puppy and I blurted out the words. "You know what? I will go with you."

He stared at me in shock. "Really?"

"Really." I smiled. "Thanks Fred." I collected my books, "I'll meet you here again tomorrow? I really need some help with studying?"

He nodded eagerly. "OK!"

That night that I went to sleep, I felt a smile tug on my lips when I thought about Fred's eager and surprised smile.

Dozing off to sleep, I was awakened by the sound of rocks being hit against the window.

Sleepily, I stumbled towards my window. I pulled my curtains back and stared down. Ran fell heavily against the ground and a figure standing outside.

I gasped and suddenly felt wide awake.

WHAT THE HELL! SHOULD I CALL THE POLICE?!

My phone on the bedside table, suddenly vibrated. I stared at it blindly, till my vision cleared and I noticed the name on it.

I grabbed for it. "Caleb." I breathed, I walked towards the window robotic-ally. My lips opened to the form the words 'I think that there might be someone outside of my house.', before I realised who it was.

Squinting below, I noticed Caleb's clothes drenched, his hair stuck to his face and a phone was pressed towards his ear. "Alley." He said my name so clearly, so memorizing... that my heart skipped a beat. "This is the last time I'll ever speak to you. Right now, I'm memorising your face." I swallowed back my sudden tightened throat. "But I cant do it. Every time I think of you... I feel a deep pain in my chest." He took a deep breath. "If you weren't interested you could have told me. I would have understood." I opened my mouth but he spoke over me, WHAT DID HE MEAN BUT INTERESTED?! "These past few months have been the best of my life, you're my best best friend. You always will be." The last words that came from his mouth, stopped my accelerated heart. "Goodbye Alley."

"Caleb..." I choked, but there was no sound from the other end of my phone. I watched as Caleb hung up his phone and stared up at me. He stayed there for a few seconds and gave a small nod, before leaving, disappearing outside and... from my life.

I was left feeling more confused then ever.
