It had been two long days and we had been right at home for forty-eight hours and hadn't seen each other.
Lily never came out of her room though I pleaded with her severally.
A knock at the door at 3pm.
"Heyy... how are you doing?", I asked the moment I opened the door.
"Mmm...", came the reply.
Standing with her arms folded across her chest, I made a gesture with my head, directing her inside and asked her to sit on the bed.
I sat beside her and took her hand in mine."I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you, Lil. I arrived at noon buh my head was immediately flooded with mum's memories when I sat in a cab on my way here. You know what that does to me, don't you? The nostalgia was so strong that I decided to hit it away with just a glass of alcohol so ... so yes, I went to take a drink at a pub. I realised it was almost a half past 10, last evening.
I had spent more than 10 hours in there and decided to head straight home but Lil,.... I found myself in his house again...." Lily looked at me with disappointment and disgust."So he gifted you with that blush, huh?", she said and chuckled.
"No, Lil", I tried defending him, lifting my palm to cover my cheek which had been red since he hit me and was surprisingly not fading.
"He... you know, I... he...c'mon Lil, I provoked him! I told you I was drunk." I said with my gaze lowered.
I lifted my face when she said, "No. No, you c'mon Rox. This beast has been abusing you for two years and you refuse to report him to the police. Fine... why don't you want to leave him? He doesn't love you for goodness sake. He's only after your money!"
"No, he's not. He ... well, he... he loves me and...", I said.
Lily raised her hand, signalling me to stop.
She stood up and grabbed my arm, walking downstairs to the kitchen. It smelled so good in there. Lily had ordered some food so we helped ourselves to eat and she smiled when we both reached for the chicken sauce which we both wanted fully to ourselves so I gave in and handed it over to her. That was when we both burst into laughter."Don't keep me waiting again, Roxporsche." she said and we had another laugh as I walked over to her side and grabbed her in a bear hug.
After the meal, we decided to freshen up and watch a movie together.I had a great evening with Lily but I couldn't sleep when I went to bed because I knew so well that I would have that dream once my lids went shut.
It happened.
It always did when I had a good day and mood.
I took the album on my table and brushed my palms over the pictures as I stifled yawns and thought hard of how to end everything that was being a restriction to our happiness; Lily and I.I didn't realise when I slept off but with my eyes sore, I woke up to the smell of bacon and toast. I reluctantly pulled my mask off and traced where the smell came from. It was on my night stand. Bacon, poached eggs, toast and juice; mango, I presumed. She knew that was my favourite and wouldn't prepare another.
"Oh my!! Hey, you startled me!", I screamed and threw a pen from the stand at her.
Lily sat in my comfy chair and watched me while I took my surrounding in.
She gave out a giggle, smirked and said, "Well, it's a half past ten, shining so bright and I'm still struggling to remember what tedious work you did yesterday, Roxporsche."I answered, getting out of bed, pushing my feet into my slippers and walking towards the bath, "Oh well, you stressed me out with worry before you spoke to me in the evening.
And oh! Hey, my name's Rox."
We both laughed at the last statement. Two weeks after Lily was adopted at age six, she named me Roxporsche because I fancied expensive stuff. Mum didn't want me to feel lonely so when I let her know about how I was dejected without a playmate, she suggested an adoption since she was never going to let me out of the house to play with the neighbor's kids or even kids from school.
We took Lily in because while mum completed formalities and decided on which of the kids to adopt, I found one kid with her hair permed and tied up in a ponytail huddled in a corner of the play room at the orphanage. I approached her and immediately recognised the magazine she had been staring at.
"Would you love to travel across the world?", I asked and she raised her head startled. She sprunt up and put the book behind her back.
"What do you want?", she asked in a very tiny but cute voice.
"I'm Roxy, eleven. My mum and I are here to adopt a sister" I said and grinned.
"Really?"she asked and I nodded with a smile which she returned.
"' My name's Lilian. I'm four... no, no I'm five years old and I'm always mocked when I'm seen with magazines like this. They say I'll never leave this place because I'm too dull", she pouted after saying.
"Who bullies you here?" I asked and she said the older girls.
I had narrated to mum when she came around and she also fell in love with her. Mum said she had lovely hair. We later got to know that she was six years old from her documents.
We became best friends and just like real sisters. Mum and I travelled with her to places she had always dreamt of visiting.
Two days after she turned 17; the day, after which our flight to Switzerland was scheduled together with her, mum was murdered...
I came out of the bath and finished off everything on the plate that Lily had prepared for me.
"Great meal. Where are you taking classes?" I asked.
"Not for you to know, Roxporsche. Not now." She smiled and suddenly became shy, blushing.
Then I knew she was up to something. She stood up to leave and I reminded her, "My name is Rox. And I saw that blush. Well, he's lucky"
She threw her head back in laughter and threw the pen at me, saying "Ever wondered why I always laugh when you say that? Because you just pretend to hate the name, Roxporsche."
She banged my door in.
