Almost a week later the news had arrived that John Shelby was dead. Tommy's cousin Micheal had been injured and was in hospital too, which was going well already since the war had hardly started. Steph had received a letter from Tommy asking her to see him and discuss plans of the war. In the letter Tommy had explained that he made contact with Aberama Gold.
Steph was sat in a chair in a yard which was apparently Tommy's uncle's. She was under shelter and she watched as men put out a long table and tucked chairs underneath. Some men started cooking food and bringing over drinks as she saw Tommy walk over with a bottle of alcohol. He sat down opposite and dismissed the men. Without even asking he poured her a glass, which seemed to be whiskey. He pushed the glass over to her, just to have it get pushed back his way by her long index finger. He looked at her confused and pushed it back.
Steph's eyes met his as she picked up the glass and poured it on the floor. She put the glass back down with a thud. "Ask me and maybe I'll drink it."
Tommy laughed rolling his eyes playfully. "Miss Vanslow, would you like a drink of this whiskey. It's Irish." He winked.
She looked at him with a straight face. "Yes, please."
Tommy poured the glass once again, and pushed it over to her - once again. He picked up his own glass and drank a little bit. Keeping the glass close to his lips.
Steph watched him. "You seem cheerful." She commented with a smirk.
"I'm with you that's why." Tommy said also grinning now, although the comment caused Steph's to falter. Noticing it Tommy's did quickly too. "What?"
"Can't you be original?" She asked. Tommy swirled the whisky in his glass before sipping it again. He looked at her wondering how she was so irresistible.
"Oh because you've heard that one so many times eh?" Tommy laughed at his own joke, but he was the only one laughing. Steph furrowed her brows.
"Yeah actually."
Tommy's smile fell. "Alright well give me a moment and I'll come back to you." He said finishing his drink and pouring another one, this time leaving it on the table. He looked at no where in particular curiously.
Steph grinned and she took a sip of her own whiskey. She admired the man in front of her. His cheek bones were high and his eyes were a deep and dark blue. "Right, whilst you are thinking, what is your plan?" She asked.
Tommy inhaled and moved his eyes back to her. "I've gotten in touch with Aberama Gold as you know. He's going to be eating here later with us lot since Christmas was ruined." He sighed pulling out a cigarette and offering one.
Steph declined. "I don't smoke." She smirked at him whilst pulling out the lighter she had stolen on their first encounter and lighting his cigarette. Tommy nodded at her as a thank you whilst taking in a drag.
He leant forward and leant on his elbows, blowing smoke into Steph's face. "You don't smoke eh?" he chuckled lightly, offering her the cigarette. She took it and inhaled it slowly before handing it back.
"No. I don't." Steph picked up the glass and took a large sip. She swallowed the rest and filled up another. "So the plan is, Aberama is going to win this war for you?"
Tommy sniffed. "Well no, well. No, he's just going to help. Once the war has properly kicked off we can think strategically of how to kill Luca." He explained.
"I see." Steph nodded her head and taking a sip. "I see."
"I'm going to have my horse trained." Tommy commented out of nowhere.
"Okay." Steph sipped here drink, staring at the woody drink. "What will you call it?" She cocked her head up.
Tommy smiled. "Dangerous."
A smirk toyed at her lips. "Dangerous?" Tommy nodded at her. "How comes?"
Footsteps began to increase as both heads turned to the direction of it. A short man was jogging towards them. "Aberama is here Tom." he said, out of breath. He was Irish.
"Alright thank you Johnny. We will be right there." Tommy smiles at him and he went back to where he was before. Tommy swallowed the rest of his drink, Steph doing the same thing and they both stood up. He started walking and all Steph could do was follow.
In the yard Aberama stood with his son Bonnie and 2 other men. Tommy stood opposite with his hands in his coat pockets and Steph walked over and stood close by him.
The Gold's nodded at Steph as she approached and she smiled back. Aberama's eyes were now set on Tommy.
"I just took a look around. I like this place." He chuckled a little, digging his boots into the ground. "Fire for melting silver, canal to get it away. How much?" He asked.
Steph looked at Tommy. He looked extremely unimpressed. Tommy inhaled. "Nothing you see here is for sale Mr Gold." he put his cigarette to his lips.
"Oh everything is for sale. Everything." Aberama said pouring liquor on the fire which was between them. The flames grew bigger. "You tell Mr Strong I'm going to buy his yard." he smirked.
Tommy smacked his lips, fiddling with the cigarette. "This yard has been in his family since they settled."
"But I've decided to make it a part of our deal." Aberama countered.
Tommy stood for a second, staring at the man. "Charlie?" He called for his uncle. "Charlie come here." He said and he did. "I'm gonna spin a coin for your yard Charlie." He said.
Steph didn't think it was a good idea to flip a coin on property which wasn't even his own.
Charlie looked extremely confused. "You're going to what?" He asked, ensuring he heard right.
"If it's heads, Abbie here takes all of this with my blessing. And if it's tails, I fuck your daughter Mr Gold." Aberama's face fell from a smirk to anger, but Steph couldn't help but let out a snort. Her hand quickly flew to her lips to keep in her laughter. "You have 3 daughters I hear, and Esmerelda is the oldest and also the prettiest, so I'll have her." He said so nonchalantly.
Aberama's eyes were hard on Tommy. Steph swore she saw a smile toy at Bonnie's lips. Tommy threw the coin to Aberama to spin it. Aberama inspected it for a moment before chucking to himself.
"No." Tommy scolded. "Please don't believe this is a joke." He said pointing an accusing finger towards him. "The coin toss is sacred, yes Arthur?"
"Sacred." Arthur repeated.
Steph had assumed Arthur was Tommy's older brother.
"Toss the coin Mr Gold." Tommy dared.
Aberama looked at the coin once again, turning it slowly in his fingers. "Tommy Shelby OBE. No wager today." He said holding up the coin. "But with this penny I will buy a flower to put on your grave, when the time comes." He finished putting the coin in his pocket.
Tommy nodded. "And before that time, please don't again disrespect my friends or their valued property." He said throwing his cigarette into the fire. "We missed Christmas, so let's have it now."
