(8) Meeting Mama and Papa Barnes

A week later

Bucky was in his office when he saw that Nikki was calling him.

"Hello.." he said

"Hey I just seen your mama. She came by to bring Vanessa her birthday present. She told me that I was more than welcomed to come next weekend." Nikki said

Bucky swallowed hard he just invited Brooklyn to the family's 4th of July week in Hamptons.

"That's not a good idea Nik." He said as he sat back in his chair.

"Why?" She said

"Because we aren't together anymore." He said

"Well that didn't stop you last summer." She said

He looked down. "Nikki please. I just don't think it's a good idea this summer." He said

"Whatever..I just thought that I would run it by you." She said

"Nikki I'm sorry." He said

"What's going on with you Buck?" She said

"I'm working Nikki. I just don't think it's a good idea I have to get back to work." He said then hung up.

That night while he was making dinner for him and Brooklyn. She had her arms wrapped around him from behind when Winnie called his phone. He put it on speakerphone.

"Hey mama.." he said

"Son What is wrong with you? Nikki called earlier she was upset. She said that you told her you didn't want her on the trip." She said

"Mom..all I said was it wasn't a good idea." Bucky said

"Why is it not a good idea? She is the mother of your daughters. Give me one good reason.." she said

Bucky looked down. "Because I'm bringing someone that I've sorta been seeing." He said

"James we haven't heard anything about you dating someone new. Why didn't you just tell Nikki that?" Winnie said

"Mom..because it's none of her business right now. Brooklyn hasn't even met the girls yet." He said

Brooklyn let go of him he pulled her back to him. "Well James I would like meet her and I'm sure your daddy would too. So why don't you bring her over for dinner this weekend?" Winnie said

"Mom I am not 16 anymore.." he said

"James.." she said

Bucky sighed. "Fine..we will be over Saturday." Bucky said he knew there was no arguing with his mom.

He hung up the phone. "Your mom isn't going to like me is she?" Brooklyn said

He turned around he picked her up and sat her up on the counter. "Baby she is going to love you.." he said as he kissed her nose.

"Bucky don't lie to me." She said

"Brooke..don't be like that. Didn't Josh's parents like you? I mean you married their son." He said

She let out a laugh. "I may have married their son. But no they didn't like me. His dad Harold was a retired Colonel. He felt a woman's place was in the kitchen..his mom Adelaide she hated me from the geico she didn't like that I enlisted she felt I should of been at home as well. She always told me that women aren't suppose to be outspoken they are to be quiet and make babies. She didn't like that we agreed  to wait for babies." She said

"And they let me know too. The night before his funeral in Arlington I was already a hot mess and then I had my in laws from hell. Harold smacked me across the face yelling at me that it was my fault cause he was probably to busy protecting me to care about himself. Addie let me know that she was happy that she had another son to carry on the Dillard name. That I was a horrible woman for not giving him babies.." she said as she wiped tears.
