Peter's POV

In shop class, I hit the casing with a hammer. The glowy thing emits purple light as it is partially freed from the metal casing.

"Oh." I gasp. I start to pull it apart quickly. Ned joins me.

"Hey, thanks for bailing on me." He hisses.

"Yeah, well, something came up." I defend. Ned spots the glowing thing, and his eyes widen.

"Oh, what is that?" He asks. I struggle to take the machine apart.

"I don't know. Some guy tried to vaporize me with it." I whisper.

"Seriously?" Ned asks.

"Yeah." I nod.

"Awesome." Ned gushes. I look at Ned, surprised by his absurd reaction. "I mean, not awesome. Totally uncool of that guy. So scary." I give him a look and continue to work at the casing.

"Well, look, I think it's a power source." I say.

"Yeah, but it's connected to all these microprocessors. That's an inductive charging plate. That's what I use to charge my toothbrush." Ned says. He points at a charging mechanism connected to various wires.

"Whoever's making these weapons is obviously combining alien tech with ours." I deduct.

"That is literally the coolest sentence anyone has ever said. I just want to thank you for letting me be part of your journey into this amazing-" Ned starts, but I don't listen to him. I bring up a hammer and hit the glowy thing really hard. It pops out from its place, glowing brightly. I and Ned immediately look at the teacher. The teacher is reading a book, sitting in his chair. He does not look up once.

"Keep your fingers clear of the blades." Mr. Hapgood sighs. We turn back and look at the glowy thing which popped out.

"I gotta figure out what this thing is and who makes it." I say.

"We'll go to the lab after class and run some tests." Ned says.

"Do you think Kat might have a clue on what it is?" I ask.

"Maybe." Ned shrugs. "But try to refrain from turning into a tomato when she's around?"

"I don't!" I defend.

"Yes you do. It's confusing her." Ned shakes his head.

"What do you mean, confusing? She literally has mind-reading powers!" I snap.

"I mean, she has a huge crush on you. It's distracting her from using her powers when you're around, but when you're around Liz, she can tell you like her." Ned sighs.

"How do you-" I start.

"I eavesdropped on their conversation. Her and MJ." Ned curtly responds.

"You what?" I whisper.

"I'm your wingman okay dude? Chose one girl." Ned shakes his head.

"Alright. Let's go find Kat after school, and I'll try to refrain from blushing." I sigh. We share our secret handshake. School ends quickly, and we catch up to Kat fairly quickly.

"Kat!" I yell, and she turns around instantly.

"Hey." She waves.

"We need your help." Ned says, holding out the glowy thing. "Do you know what this is?" Kat takes it in her hands, and she studies the thing. Aw, she's so cute when she does that. Her eyes and nose scrunch up, and-

"I'm not sure, but I believe it's something left behind from the Battle of New York City." She informs, setting it on Ned's hand. "What else?"

"Can you help us find the person? I think it's the same thing from the weapons the robbers used on us." I ask.
