I couldn't help but feel nervous as we head into the grocery store. What if Mrs. Brown couldn't help me? Would that make us homeless? I bite my nails. I had a habit of always biting my nails and I finally overcame it but now it's all coming but to me.
Carter could tell I was a little nervous but he didn't say anything which I'm so grateful for.
I decided to ease my nervousness and asks "So, what are you getting?"
"Huh, oh um... just stuff." He says kind of unsure which was kind of weird.
I head to the cashier and saw a girl around my age. She had blonde hair and wore glasses, she looked cute as she pushes her glasses up. "Hello, what can I help you with?" She looks around to see I had no bag with me.
Carter was so confused but I tried to ignore him "Actually, I'm here to see Mrs. Brown, your manager."
"Oh okay." She says with a smile. She seems nice. "Well, you just have to go left and through that door." She points to it.
"Oh, thank you," I say and walk toward it with Carter following me.
We reached the door when Carter says "I'm so confused. What's going on?"
I was kind of embarrassed to tell him about this. Would he make fun of me? Deep down I knew he wouldn't but it was still embarrassing to talk about. "I-I'm getting a job."
"What?" He says and I nod. "Why?" He softly asks.
"It's personal, but basically I need to earn money," I say. He opens his mouth to say something and I interrupt him "Don't try to help me out or anything. I knew he was going to say something like that and I didn't want his money or anything it would just make me feel bad."
"Kate, stop being stubborn, I can help you." He tries to convince me but I already made up my mind.
"I don't want your help and that's the end of discussion." He knew he couldn't change my mind so he grudgingly nods.
"Okay. If that's what you want." He sighs. "But when you're done, I'll drive you home."
"Nah, you should probably go, this might take a while," I tell him.
He looks uncertain as he asks "Are you sure?"
I nod and he agrees. "See you tomorrow then, bye," I say and was about to step into the office before Carter pulls me in for a hug.
What the freak.
He takes a deep breath as he wraps his hand around my waist. To say this was weird was an understatement. I realized how this would look for an outsider, it would be Carter hugging me while I just stand there awkwardly.
Before I could hug him back because I felt bad, a voice interrupts up "Ahem." We both jump away from each other. "I thought I heard someone outside my door."
"Mrs. Brown it's very nice to see you again," I say trying to move past the awkward scenario earlier.
"Same my dear." She says smiling widely.
"Well, I'm going to head out," Carter says scratching his neck which I observe he only does that when he was nervous or embarrassed. "Bye Kitty."
When he was out of sight, I look back at Mrs. Brown, and she motion for me to come in with her. When the door was close she says "Not a good impression on your first day here." She teases.
"Sorry about that," I say. I take a deep breath before sitting.
"Glad to see you have a boyfriend. He's cute."
