The voice of my best friend, Lauren, was heard as she bellowed from outside my room, announcing that it was time to get going. I clicked on the lock button of my phone that it was currently 6:00 pm, meaning that it was time to get going.
We were going over to Lauren's boyfriend's house for the night just to hide for the Purge, which starts in an hour. His name is Cameron; I would say I'm pretty close with him, since Lauren and him have been together for months now, and of course I would have already met him.
Lauren and I are practically sisters!
We're roommates. We have been ever since we were both sixteen - two years ago. The reason why we became roommates is very grief; three years ago, both our parents were killed in the annual Purge of that year.
You see, Lauren and I were neighbours and we have spoken a few times when we see each other, but we never really hung out. My parents and her parents were pretty close with each other, though.
The night of the Purge, both of our parents had left us alone at my house as they went out to gather up all the things we needed, because our parents decided that we should all stick together for the year's Purge (because they trusted each other that well). But 7pm came along and so did the announcement and the siren, but they never came back.
The whole twelve hours spent locked in our house, down in my basement, both Lauren and I stayed with each other and sobbed, knowing that our parents didn't make it back on time. We were both put into an adoption house for the next two years until we both turned eighteen, and that's when we decided to live together.
I trust Cameron, and I trust that he won't murder Lauren and I when we spend the night there, hiding for our lives - literally. I know he wouldn't harm Lauren in any way. He loves her way too much to do that.
I slung my backpack (which had all the necessities I needed for the night) over my shoulder and walked out of my room and downstairs where Lauren was impatiently waiting by the door, a backpack also on her back.
"Are you ready?" she asked me whilst opening the front door, revealing the outside of our apartment. The sight of reality scared me; there were some people that were leaning on the walls or walking around, waiting for the Purge to begin - and they weren't very subtle about it, either. They had their vicious smirks on their faces and they either caressed the blade of their knife or played with their gun.
"Yeah," I breathe out and nodded, stepping out into the slightly dark streets as Lauren followed behind me after locking our apartment door.
Since neither one of us had a car, we both had to walk ten minutes to get to Cameron's house, and it was terrifying for me, noticing that many people had decided to take part in this Purge and were sending us deadly grins.
Obviously it would scare me.
We finally reached Cameron's house at 6:11 pm, and Cameron must have been worried because once he opened the door and saw Lauren, he closed his eyes in relief and squeezed her into a tight hug.
Not wanting to interrupt them, I squeezed through Cameron and went into his house, which immediately led to his living room where a boy with dirty-blonde hair stood near the couch, looking towards the door to see who had rung the doorbell.
My heartbeat quickened, since I didn't know who this boy was or if I should trust him. Cameron eased my nervousness when he introduced him, though. "Oh, uh, guys - this is my best friend, Matthew," he told us and patted Matthew's back. He just smiled forcefully and sat down on the couch. "He's going to be staying with us the...you know."
