Panting was all you could hear as Matthew and I slowed to a stop after running (well, occasionally taking breaks) for about fifteen minutes, or what felt like fifteen minutes. His hands were still intertwined with mine and he pulled me close to him, making sure I would be safe.
I'm not even sure what happened with the sudden plot twist. I thought that Blake and Bethany can be trusted because of how sincere they were when we met them, but I also suspected something iffy with the two. I bet they were planning this the entire time – they were waiting for fish to catch, and those fish were Matthew and I.
Matthew led me to an abandoned brick building that was only one-story high. It was like a warehouse where gangs meet, because the entrance was located inside an alley. I have no idea how Matthew knows where the entrance was, but I'm not complaining – at least we had a place to rest.
"Go in." Matthew whispered and held open the door for me, letting go of my hand. I nodded and calmed my breathing as I entered the dark warehouse, Matthew following behind me. I heard him shut the door close and I heard a lock.
Since I had my phone in my pocket, I pulled it out and turned on the flashlight and shone it at Matthew. He motioned me to follow him and I did; he went to the corner of the big area, where I assume we're going to rest there.
Matthew sat down and I sat down beside him, the both of us avoiding eye contact. I then felt the urge to pee and so I stood up and was immediately grabbed in the arm by Matthew, startling me because of how briskly he had done it. "Where are you going?" he asked me, furrowing his eyebrows.
"I-I have to use the washroom." I tell him, unsure on why he was acting this way.
"Oh," he mumbled and let go of my arm, pointing to a direction. "I know there's one over there. It actually flushes." he notified me and I nodded, questioning him mentally on how he knew there was one there. I mean, if I'm correct, this was the first time Matthew and I have stepped foot in this place. I would ask Matthew about it, but I decided against it because that didn't matter.
I nodded and used my flashlight as a guide to the washroom. Just like Matthew said, the toilet actually did flush.
When I went back to Matthew, the street lamp was giving him his own light, and I saw that he was looking down at his lap, where he played with his fingers. His head snapped towards me when he noticed I was there and I swear I saw relief pass his face.
I sat back down beside him and he asked: "Can I borrow your phone?" and I handed it to him. I was confused at first on why he needed my phone, but I watched him set an alarm to...5:00 am? It was 11:20 right now and I don't think I can wake up that early, especially after the tiring night.
"Matthew, why five? I can't wake up that early!"
"You'll sleep for seven hours, Olivia. Just deal with it." Matthew snarled and I was taken back at his change of tone and change of attitude. I guess it wasn't really a change, because it was his regular attitude, but it was a change from his nice attitude.
"Sorry..." I muttered and scooted a bit away from Matthew. The tension between him and I went back to its usual: it was a strong tension.
"Shit, Olivia, I'm sorry." Matthew sighed and scooted towards me. I looked at him after he said those words, surprised because I didn't know Matthew can apologize. I know that he should be sorry (I'm being honest here), but I didn't expect him to say it out loud. "I keep being an ass to you and you didn't even do anything wrong."
"Uh, it's okay, Matthew. I forgive you." I assured him and even flashed a tiny smile.
"No. It's actually not okay...goddammit, I should have never allowed those two to come along with us, and I should have never even left you alone! I'm sorry that you were in this is mess. I know that you think I hate you and I know you think that you're nothing to me...I heard you say it to Blake...but I don't hate you, Olivia, and I've learned that, without you, I am weaker. When I was alone with Bethany, I didn't feel complete, and I knew I needed you-" I stopped Matthew from talking on and on by doing something daring: I smashed my lips onto his.
