You and Draco were good friends, and often met up by the black lake to study together, or sometimes to just hangout. It was your thing. There was something Draco didn't know yet: you had a date in a few days with Hogwarts' golden boy, Cedric Diggory. He had already caught your eye a few months ago, but you dismissed it, thinking he had no idea who you were. You thought wrong. He had asked you out earlier today, and you, being surprised that he was even aware of your existence, said yes. Who wouldn't say yes? He was kind, smart, and ridiculously attractive.

You currently walked through the halls of Hogwarts, making your way to the black lake for yet another one of your hangouts with Draco. Today, you were hoping to get advice from Draco for you and Cedric's upcoming date.

You had liked Draco back in your third year, and it only took a week for you to confess to him. However, Draco had kindly told you that he wanted to remain friends because he had liked someone else. That "someone else" happened to be Pansy Parkinson, a girl you weren't quite fond of. You were hurt at first, but you had eventually gotten over it and continued to remain good friends with him. You were surprised when the two had broken up at the end of that year.

What you didn't know, however, was that Draco now had feelings for you. The tables had turned. It started at some point during the middle of your fourth year. At first, he was questioning why his heart skipped a beat whenever he had heard your voice, or why he felt a warm feeling spread through him whenever he saw you smile. He was confused, until he wasn't. He had eventually figured it out. He was in love with you.

Over time, Draco has been gathering up the courage to confess to you, until he had finally decided that he was going to do it a week from now. He was quite anxious about it, considering he had rejected you back in your third year, which would soon be his biggest regret.

You had finally made it to the Black Lake, immediately noticing Draco waiting for you at your usual spot by the tree on the edge of the lake. You could spot that head of platinum-blond hair anywhere.

"Hi, Dray," you greeted with a smile as you walked up to him. He turned around and his eyes lit up as he saw you.

You were the only person he allowed to call him "Dray," mostly because you were his closest friend. Even if he didn't like you calling him that, which wasn't true, he wouldn't have the heart to tell you. He couldn't stand you being disappointed.

"Hey, Y/N/N," he replied, returning your smile with one of his own. You both sat down next to each other by the tree, rummaging through your bags in search of your assignments.

Nearly an hour that consisted of studying and small-talk had passed before you remembered that you needed to ask Draco about your impending date with Cedric.

"So, Dray. I've got something to ask you." He snapped his head up to look at you as he felt his heart rate speed up. His mind was now racing with thoughts of what you could possibly ask him. He didn't want to get his hopes up, though.

"Okay, what's up?" He gave you a small smile and patiently waited for you to continue, trying to cover up his anxiousness.

"So, um, I've got a date in a few days with this guy that I really like, and I was just wondering if you've got any advice for me?" You asked hopefully. "As you know, I've never been on a date before and I really don't want to fuck it up," you laughed.

Draco felt his heart shatter into pieces. He felt a lump forming in his throat as a huge wave of disappointment washed over him. He tried his best to cover it up, though. He cleared his throat and put on his best fake smile before speaking.

"Um, I would say to just be yourself. Ask him questions about himself, without being overbearing, and smile a lot, because you have a really nice smile." Ironically, you smiled at him and let out a sigh of relief.

"Merlin, Dray, thank you. I honestly have no idea what I'd do without you," you praised, hugging him. He tightly hugged back, blushing.

"So, who's the lucky guy?" He asked with a fake laugh as you both pulled away.

"Cedric Diggory." You slightly smiled as you said his name.

"That Hufflepuff with red hair?" He asked. You hummed in response, nodding.

"Well, congratulations. You must be excited." You didn't notice how Draco's voice shook slightly.

"Yeah, I am. I'm surprised that he was even aware of my existence," you chuckled. He forced out a laugh in response.

"Well, uh, I should start heading back to my dorms, now. My roommates wanted me to study with them for the upcoming Potions test," Draco lied as he stood up, grabbing his stuff. You followed suit, also standing up and grabbing your stuff.

"Yeah, I should probably start heading back, too. Y/F/N's waiting for me and she's going to kill me if I take too long. Bye, Dray." You side-hugged him before walking away and waving him goodbye.

"See you, Y/N/N." He waved back, turning around to walk the other way. He went back into the school and speed-walked through the halls with tears welled up in his eyes.

Eventually, he reached his dorm and walked in, shutting the door behind him as he finally let the tears run down his cheeks. He slowly slid down the door as he covered his mouth and with his hand and quietly sobbed. He just lost the chance to be with you, and it was his fault. If he hadn't rejected you for Pansy back in their third year, or if he had just stopped being a fucking coward and confessed earlier, you two could've been happy together by now. Why was he such an idiot?

He started to doubt himself. Cedric was the "golden boy" of Hogwarts, whereas Draco was just a narcissist bully. Cedric was well-liked, kind, and attractive. Draco was nothing. He couldn't even begin to compare to Cedric.

It's undeniable that if you heard his thoughts right now, you would hug him and say something along the lines of "don't be ridiculous, Draco, you're perfect." But you weren't there. You couldn't hear his thoughts. You had feelings for someone else, and there was nothing Draco could do now except be happy for his best friend.
