I was staring too much at the guy waiting in the lunch line. Too much. I was studying every muscle on his side, and exactly how and where his nose curves. I was scrutinizing every lock of his perfect brown hair. I was staring too much, but who cares? He couldn't see me. He was too focused on his food to look anywhere else. All the better for me.
"So tell me this," Tiara said. "When the hell do you intend to actually tell him that you like him. What're you waiting for, Aubrey?"
"I....don't know, okay? I just keep putting it off. It scares me. I feel like if I told him, he'd just be all up in my face saying It was a joke! and that he doesn't really like me."
"That's just stupid, but okay. Just tell him before his feelings for you wear off."
I nodded. "Where is he, anyway?" she asked.
"In the lunch line," I said almost immediately, then changed the topic when Tiara raised her brow and smiled. "I heard your date with Shane was a huge hit."
She smiled and glanced at him, "Yeah, it was fun."
"Oh, I'm sure it was."
She shrugged again, and Mel and Dean finally pulled away from each other behind me, their breaths totally out of control. I didn't even tell them off this time, knowing full well they wouldn't listen. So I just gave them my back. They make out way too much.
"I see the two of you are finally done with each other's tongues," Shane spoke.
Dean nodded, "More or less."
I shuddered, "Please stop making out now."
Melody chuckled, "Are we disturbing you, Aubrey?"
"Yes. I sincerely hope the two of you get on with it soon. Your desperation at the cafeteria table scars us all."
Mel didn't show any signs of embarrassment, "Oh, shut up."
"You know," Dave said. "I wonder how Jaden still doesn't know -"
From behind Dave, I saw my hazel-eyed idiot approaching us with a tray filled with food in hand, "Shh!"
Oh, thank god for eyesight.
"I still don't know what?" Jaden asks.
Spoke too soon. Don't thank god for anything, especially hearing.
"That....it's Aubrey's birthday two months from now."
I was surprised Dave knew that, but oh come on, ever heard of nice saves?
Alas, there was nothing I could do except nod.
"I do know that, Dave," Jaden narrowed his eyes at him. "What about her birthday?"
"Nothing," Dave said. "I just thought you didn't know."
Jaden nodded uncertainly, "You make no sense." Then he plopped himself down next to me, on the empty seat everyone had avoided in order to get away from Melody and Dean's tongue-wrestling. Obviously, it didn't matter to Jaden.
"You could get a mouth-related infection if you sit there," I said. "The girl next to you makes out too much."
Jaden raised his eyebrow suggestively, "You're the girl next to me."
"No you twat! The other girl next to you!"
He turned to the other side, "Hey Mel!"
"Hey Jaden!"
"It bothers you to look at people make out?" Jaden turned back to me.
"No, it bothers me to look at my two best friends make out."
