By the time Evelyn made it back to her apartment, she was nearly floating off of the ground. That was the best date she could've ever asked for. Dan was so funny; his commentary and his jokes were so enjoyable, she nearly lost track of the show they were watching. When they weren't talking he was sitting there, intensely staring at the television, looking so heart-wrenched and intrigued. It was amazing for Evelyn to watch. She'd never seen anyone so devoted to a show before. Then again, she'd never been the fangirl type. As she graced across the threshold and dropped her bag on the floor next to the door, for the first time in forever, she didn't feel the temptations of food that she normally did whenever she came home from something. For some reason, she didn't feel like she wanted to hurt herself, or that she wanted to eat anything. It was strange. It was amazing. Evelyn wondered why she never felt this way. Then she remembered. She dropped from her dream state back to reality. She all of a sudden felt incredibly tired, and just wanted to go to sleep. She trudged through her apartment towards her bedroom, stopping at her bathroom first, as she started to remove her makeup in the sink, watching the different colors of black and beige spiral down the drain, as she looked up at the mirror to dry her face, she saw it. The slitted pupils, the evil grin; the monster in the mirror. She slowly backed away, but she couldn't go far, because she ran into the wall behind her. She pressed as close as she could into it, without breaking through the plaster. The thing moved closer and closer to the mirror's face, unyielding in it's malicious stare. It came so close to the mirror, that Evelyn feared that it would jump out and attack her. But it stopped. It stopped, and it stared out above her, like it was looking in the mirror itself. Then, just like last time, it took out its glinting, almost beautifully silver knife. It moved its face from left to right, surveying each side of its face intently. Then, with its left cheek raised to the mirror, the monster took the knife and made a long cut in the flesh of her cheek, from her ear to the corner of her mouth. She then did the same on the other side, not flinching, not screaming, not wincing. She just stood there, drawing the blade over and through the skin of her face, her only showing emotion being her sinister smile. When she was done, she stood, and sharply looked down to Evelyn. Her face looked like it held a great big red smile, and the cuts were quickly starting to spill blood down her chin. She looked at Evelyn, the slits in her eyes growing bigger and smaller in the light. She then smiled even wider, causing her wounds to bleed even faster. Then, with a demonic hiss, same as last time, she said, "I finally have cheekbones!" It seemed like a stupid thing to say in the moment, but it meant too much to Evelyn. She'd always hated her round, fat, puffy face, and envied the girls with their beautiful, defined cheekbones. She'd always wanted plastic surgery to fix it, but she'd never had the money or the courage. With all the strength she could rally, Evelyn rose from the floor and ran from the bathroom, into her room, and flung herself onto her bed. She then curled up in a ball, hugging her knees to her chest, and started to cry again. She shook from terror and from her sobs, and she immediately knew that she wasn't going to get any sleep that night. The image of the monsters red, bloodstained cheeks filled her mind, and the horrible smile and eyes were engraved into her memory. It was almost to much to bear. As Evelyn lay there on her unmade bed, trying to cry her fear away, she managed to nestle herself into her blankets, and started to wonder if she was going insane. Evelyn prayed that this wasn't true, it couldn't be. And suddenly, with all of the build up of her sadness, and anger, Evelyn started to wish that Dan was there to lay next to her, to tell her that it was all right, even though she knew for sure it definitely wasn't.
Evelyn awoke the next morning, still fully clothed from the night before, her face covered in dried tears. She groaned as she rose from under the covers, checking the time. It was eleven. She'd slept for nearly ten hours. It was the most sleep she'd gotten in a long time. As she got up from the bed, she started to scratch her head, revealing the tangles in her hair from forgetting to brush her hair last night, in her terrifyed haste. As she made her way to the bathroom, she stopped, suddenly struck with fear with the memories of the night before, and she proceeded slowly, so that she wouldn't have to come face to face with the monster if it was still in the mirror. As Evelyn inched closer and closer to the doorway, she gained more a view of the round, elegantly framed mirror on the wall. It was empty, except for the black reflection of the wall in front of it. The horrible image had disappeared, just as it had done the first time it showed itself to her. Evelyn sighed heavily with relief; now she could enter the room without fear. As Evelyn took her place in front of the white, grandly framed mirror, she started to wonder what the monster was. It was obviously a version of her, but where it came from, what it wanted, was still unclear to her. She shook herself from the thought, and started to pull her brush through her nest of a bedhead, avoiding looking in the mirror all the while. As Evelyn yanked out the tangles, she couldn't help but think about her date with Dan. It was one of the best nights of her life. Before, she was just overwhelmed with how much fun she'd had with Dan, but now she couldn't stop herself from thinking about him; Just him. She pictured his round face in her mind, how when he smiled, his eyes squinted up a bit, and his cheekbones became so much more defined. But what always caught her attention wasn't his tall physique, not his slightly awkward posture, but his eyes. The way they sparkled whenever he talked about something he was passionate about, the way they lit up the room when he laughed, and the way the deep-chocolatey color drew her in; made her feel safe. In a way, their warmth wrapped around her like an embrace, and it made her feel like there was no where else she would rather be. All of these emotions boiled up inside of Evelyn, and she had to stop what she was doing to look at herself in the mirror.
