Lunar had been at Xavier’s School for the Gifted for a month. In the daytime it was the best place in the world, although she didn’t want to admit it, but at night she was restless. Nightmares from her past kept her from sleeping and after a month of that it had taken its toll; she had dark circles under her eyes and had become increasingly more lethargic. Of course she wasn’t as bad as Logan or Scott, every night at least one of them would start screaming in their sleep, usually it was Logan as Scott had gotten into the habit of staying in her room claiming that he felt better being near her. She was watching the sunrise when Logan screamed again, it used to make her jump when he’d randomly scream out but now it was like a part of the atmosphere.
“What was that?” Scott muttered as he sat up.
Lunar looked over towards him and stretched before walking away from the window. “Just Logan again.”
“Again, I swear he’s getting worse.”
“Well he doesn’t have someone to comfort him every time he has a nightmare.” She paused before another thought came to her head. “He probably wouldn’t accept anyone trying ether.”
“Think he’ll come out of his room today?” Scott got up and walked towards the door so he could go to his room to get ready.
“It’s been over six weeks since she died… I doubt it.” Lunar told him quietly.
Scott nodded and looked at the ground for a moment before leaving; Lunar quickly went over to her closet and changed into a similar outfit that she always wore before going into her bathroom to brush her hair and teeth. By the time she finished and went out into the hallway Scott was already waiting for her.
“You’re getting slower.” He commented and Lunar could tell he was examining her. “Maybe you shouldn’t try the danger room today.”
Lunar shook her head. “I’m fine. Just not fully awake yet.”
“You haven’t been sleeping you’re not going to get fully awake.” Scott scolded quietly so Storm didn’t hear as they passed her in the hall.
“I can’t… every time I close my eyes I die over and over again or am watching as Stryker’s people force me back to life… sometimes though they’re the one’s killing me.” Lunar felt him put a hand on her shoulder to steady her as she staggered.
“It’s over. Stryker’s gone, he can’t hurt you anymore.”
“I keep telling myself that… I just, just can’t make my mind believe it.” Lunar shook her head helplessly. “Is this what you felt like… after you were freed?”
Scott frowned as he thought about it. “I don’t remember, but I can guess that I felt similar.”
“And how did you manage to convince yourself you were safe?”
“My friends helped… and I think the Professor allowed me to go back once to see that the place was truly destroyed and I wouldn’t be locked up again.”
“Later… after the danger room, do you think we could go to Alkali Lake?” Lunar looked up at him. “You were muttering again last night, maybe if you come with me it will help you too.”
“Of course we can go.” Scott promised.
They walked into the kitchen and Lunar made some toast to eat while Scott made himself a bowl of cereal. After she finished eating she put her dishes into the sink and walked the rest of the way to the danger room leaving Scott to catch up. The others were already there waiting for them, except for Storm who came quickly walking down the hall from the other direction to join the group.
“Let me guess.” Bobby spoke up. “Professor Logan won’t be joining us?”
“Correct.” Storm replied. “Now we’re all here? Let’s get started, and remember… team work is the key to defeating the danger room challenges.”
I could just picture Logan in his room drinking his feelings away like in the picture, minus the bullet wounds of course.
