So I was about to start writing the next chapter so I checked my notebook to see what the plot was and I found that I had deviated on my last chapter so now the whole plot is ruined oops. So I'm just gonna write today. I have zero percent idea what I'm going to write but I know it will be cute.
"Oh my god, America!" Marlee cries as she embraces me in a gigantic hug. "Thank god you're okay!"
I laugh as I pull back. "Of course I'm okay! Do you think anyone could get past him?" I jerk my head back towards Maxon before Marlee and I both burst out into giggles.
"Of course, silly me!" We laugh together for a few more moments, then stop suddenly, as if remembering the time and place. Maxon was still deep in conversation with Aspen, both their faces set to stone. "What do you thinks going on over there?" Marlee whispers.
"I actually have no idea. I'll find out." I whisper back before I start heading over. I grab Maxon's bicep in anxiety and grip tightly. "What's going on?" I say as there's a break in the conversation.
"Thirteen dead and countless injuries." Maxon replies. I gasp. "I guess the Southern rebels aren't happy that not all the castes are gone yet." The Southerners... he said. Was this ever going to stop? The Northerners have allied with us, but I figure the Southerners are a little more strict on what they want.
I feel my wrist slide down Maxon's arms and my fingers lacing his. Almost immediately his hand starts to squeeze mine, all the pressure escaping from his mind right out his fingertips. I gently squeeze back and continue to listen to Aspen talking. Then another guard runs over to him and whispers something in his ear. "Oh my." He says when the guard has left.
"What?!" Maxon and I both exclaim simultaneously. He gives my hand another squeeze.
Aspen looks me right in the eye. "When you were talking to Marlee, she didn't happen to know anything about her husband, did she?" I gasp, then begin to tear up.
"She seemed fine, like nothing bothered her at all." I say slowly. I still can't believe what's happened. Of course, he would have fought to the last second. To the last breath.
"She probably didn't know, dear." Maxon tries to comfort me, but I just bury my head in the crook of his shoulder and cry. Then I pull away, ashamed at my selfishness. It wasn't even my husband who died. Marlee doesn't know. She's over there looking at me and wondering what's wrong. I begin to cry again, and realise that maybe I'm not crying because he's dead. I'm crying for Marlee and the little baby inside of her.
"Will you come with me?" I ask Maxon, looking into those eyes that could melt me. "To tell her, I mean."
"Of course. I'll stay right with you." He gives my hand yet another squeeze, reminding me of his everlasting presence. We begin the short but painful trip over to Marlee, silent tears running down my cheek, Maxon's thumb running over the back of my hand.
When we reach her, she immediately knows something's wrong. How couldn't she? I rarely ever cry. "What's up?" She asks me, her voice serious.
I look to Maxon with pleading eyes, asking him to do the talking. "Marlee..." He begins. "I don't know how to put it-"
"Just spit it out!" She snarls.
"Your husband died while fighting earlier." She looks at me for confirmation and I give a solemn nod of my head. Immediately, tears begin to flood her face and she collapses into a heap on the ground. I kneel beside her and wrap my arms protectively around her as she rests her head on my shoulder. Maxon crouches behind us, one hand rubbing my back and one hand patting Marlee's shoulder. I almost laugh, remembering this piece of advice I gave him. But I don't.
Eventually after minutes of crying, Marlee lifts her head and tells us to go make our rounds and check everyone's okay. That's when I remember. Lucy.
I haven't seen her all day. Aspen's red and puffy eyes. She mightn't have ever left the room, never knew about the attack. Oh no.
Before my guesses can be confirmed, I hear a scream. "Aspen!" Lucy yells as she runs across the room, her dress being held up by two bridesmaids who are struggling to keep up. Oh thank god she's okay. I let out a breath I didn't know I'd been holding.
I see Aspen embrace as she leaps into his arms and kisses him all over, and he kisses her back. And in this moment of darkness, there is a flicker of light.
Maxon and I slowly but surely make our rounds, finishing up at the hospital wing. By then everyone has left and the wedding has been rescheduled. "We have to make her another dress, now that Aspen has seen her in that one, of course." Mary explains when I see her in the hospital wing. Of course.
Finally, the sun begins to set and dinner is served in our rooms. I sit and eat in Maxon's and he helps me out of my dress, filling the place of Mary.
"You know it's going to be like this for our whole lives, you know?" He tells me.
"I know."
"But at least I get to spend my forever with you." He sighs.
I'm taken aback. "Your what?"
"Forever."
Sorry it's so short I might update later i dont know this is really just a filler chapter I guess.
