The dark lord was cruel. Sitting at another death eater meeting, Regulus began to rethink his decisions.

He didn't want to be a death eater. He had just wanted to honor his family and protect Sirius.

The dark lord had to have a weakness, he couldn't possibly remain undefeated.

That day after the meeting, Regulus searched every book he could find in the Black manor's library, on anything which could be to his aid.

As he was going through a particular book on dark arts, a page caught his eye,
Horcruxes
Horcrux is a powerful object in which a Dark wizard or witch has hidden a fragment of his or her soul for the purpose of attaining immortality. Creating one Horcrux gives one the ability to anchor one's own soul to earth if the body is destroyed; the more horcruxes one creates, the closer one is to true immortality.

Regulus was stunned, this was much worse than what he had expected. The dark created horcruxes of himself, he definitely couldn't have made only one.

He would have to find them now.
**

He spent the next few months researching about them and looking for clues.
He figured that the dark lord should have made at least more than 3-4 horcruxes.

One day , he had been summoned by the dark lord.
"My lord."
"Rise Regulus, can I trust you?"
"Yes my lord, how may I assist you?"
"I require a house elf to aid me with a project. May I trust the house black to aid me with this?"
"Yes my lord, Kreacher can be trusted."

**

Regulus paced the wooden floors of the room, a few hours had passed since Kreacher had left with the dark lord.
What could be such an important mission that it took so long and required the help of a house elf..
Maybe his horcrux theory was right and Kreacher was assisting the dark lord with something related.

Suddenly brought back from his thoughts, he was met with a sight with a sickly looking house elf who looked ready to pass out any second.
"Kreacher! what happened?"
"M-master Regulus, k-kreacher has done w-what was asked of him. But the d-dark lord is very terrifying."
"Where did he take you kreacher?"
"The dark l-lord took K-kreacher to a cave and asked to drink aweful tasting water. Kreacher did what he was told, kreacher did not disobey Master Regulus..did he?"

Regulus could see how terrified his house elf looked. Kreacher had been his sole companion after his brother left their home.
"No Kreacher. You have not disobeyed me. Will you take me there please?"
"Y-yes master Regulus."

Kreacher disapparated them both to the cave where he had been taken.
Regulus analyzed his surroundings and deduced that the horcrux would be across the lake and that was probably where Kreacher had to drink the 'aweful tasting water'. He also realized that the Dark Lord wouldn't simply leave a horcrux there without any protective measures.

"Thank you Kreacher. Now please take me back. We need to make a plan."

----

In a few weeks, Regulus had crafted a plan and also completed his research.
He moved his quill along the last few lines of his report as he stopped for a moment. Would this actually work..?

He decided he would retrieve the horcrux from the cave and hopefully if he made  it back alive, he would continue to hunt for the others.
He looked back down at the book  infront of him. This would be the key to the defeat of the dark lord and he would make sure that this book reached the right hands to end the dark lord.

He had no guarantee that he would return from the mission to get the horcrux which Kreacher had described to be a locket. He thought over it for a moment and then decided to go with his back up anyways.
He took out a new piece of parchment and started to write,

Dear Siri,
If you are reading this I'm probably no longer a part of this world. I'm sorry for not being the brother you deserved. You were right, the dark lord is not the way to survive. I realized this late but not too late as I made my mind to find a way to ensure his defeat. I made this decision to be of some help in his defeat and for you and other people to have a better life.
By the time this reaches you I have already started the process.
I hope you are doing well. I hope you are content and happy with the Potters and I wish you and your friends a happy long life.
I'm truly sorry for not listening to you. I wish we had more time together. Once again I am truly sorry.
I love you big brother.
Love,
Reg.

He decided Sirius would be his back up as he was one person in the light who would always be a person he could rely on. He sealed the letter and placed it with the journal and put it into his coat pocket.
It was time.

--

Regulus crossed the water and made his way to the liquid with kreacher. He forced kreacher to help him drink all pf the components in the bowl.
"B-but master, the aweful liquid will hurt master."
"It's an order Kreacher. You will ensure I drink all of it and grab the locket immediately. If I am unable to make it out of here, you will give the locket, journal and letter to my brother. And make sure to tell no one of this. Is that clear?"
"Y-yes master R-regulus."
"You have always been my companion kreacher. Thank You for everything."

Kreacher sobbed helplessly as he helped his master drink the liquid bit by bit. Regulus' screams of anguish and helplessness echoed across the room but kreacher didn't give up. He would not disobey his master's wishes.

As soon as Regulus finished the last and final drop, kreacher grabbed the locket and tried to take him back home. Regulus wouldn't move, instead he was drawn towards the lake. Inferi lured him in and poor kreacher was unable to save him. At his final breathe Regulus turned to kreacher and rasped out..
"Go..to..Sirius and help him out. Complete this mission. I-I *cough* believe in you Kreacher."

Regulus Black had never imagined his life to be long anyways. He laid there motionless but with a contented smile on his face as he had done something for the betterment of the world. Even if he wasn't there to see it, he made the wizarding world a better place for the future generations including Harry Potter.

He would be known as the man who saved the wizarding world.
A brother who would be loved forever.
A hero.
