Cynthia's Perspective
It was December 26th, 1964. I still remember the exact time, 7:37 A.M. John and I were sitting in silence at the dining table. I noticed John playing with his scrambled eggs, stabbing his fork into them. My hands started shaking under the table. John glanced up at me and noticed my nervous behavior.
''You okay?'' John asked me in a very care-free tone.
I took a deep breath and began to speak my mind.
''I wanted to talk to you about something, before you leave for the airport,'' I told him.
''I'm listening,'' John mumbled.
John didn't sound rude, just tired.
''Well, first off, I want to apologize, for the whole Paul situation. What I did was wrong. You can't control who you love.'' I stopped when I saw John was uncomfortable.
He was avoiding eye contact at all costs. That's when I placed my hand on his.
''John,'' I said in a soothing tone.
He looked into my eyes, and I continued talking.
''I really want our relationship to work out, so Julian can have his amazing father around. But you have to promise me one thing. You can't have a romantic affair with Paul. I know you love him, but it's only fair to me. That's all I ask of you, John.''
''I promise, I won't. Don't worry, Cyn. Also, you're not the one who should be sorry. I should be sorry. And I am,'' John responded in a worn-out tone.
It seemed as though John was empty inside. Despite his lazy manner, he gave me a small smile.
''I know you hate when I go touring, but it's the best thing for our family. It's going to be okay in the end,'' John assured me.
I let go of his hand. I could tell that he really meant it. But there was still something off about his behavior. I realized he was acting guilty. I was about to ask him about it, but he looked at his watch and stood up.
''Oh, it looks like I gotta head out, love you,'' John said.
I told him I loved him too, and that I would miss him and all that. I really hoped that John would keep his promise. But I trusted him. And I knew he wouldn't let me down.
