PART 14: A race against time
Jay POV
I heard Daisy shout my name. I could hear the alarm in her voice. Suddenly one thought shot through my mind, I turned round so fast I caught a glimpse of the top of her head. She had fallen through the ice. “DAISY!” I shouted but she was already under. The ice rapidly cracked towards me but I managed to back off the ice and onto the bank. I heard the boys running up behind me, and I knew that they’d try and stop me. I didn’t think twice about it, I just ran and dived.
Daisy POV
It was cold. Ridiculously cold. More than freezing. The cold put my whole body into shock. I came up gasping for air but I just panted, my breathing wasn’t right, my heart beating so fast. I was trying to breath but I couldn’t. That’s when I saw a splash next to me, I couldn’t control myself, and I just went under.
Jay POV
It was beyond freezing; like nothing I had ever experienced. I went straight up and gasped for air, but I controlled my breathing. Slowing my breathing down, I looked around, I could hear shouting. It was obviously the boys. I knew there wasn’t much time, so I just dived back under.
Max POV
“SOMEONE GIVE ME THEIR PHONE WE NEED TO CALL AN AMBULANCE AND FIRE BRIGADE!” I shouted. Siva darted into him pocket and tried to dial 999 but he couldn’t concentrate, his hands were trembling. I took the phone off him and called them.
Siva POV
I tried to dial the number but my mind was elsewhere, I was trying to get my head around what was happening. I was convinced I was in a bad dream. “FUCK THIS, I’M GOING IN” Tom shouted taking his shoes off but me, Nathan and Max grabbed him. “DON’T BE STUPID” Max shouted, “You go in there; you’re a dead man!” Tom fell to the floor and cried. “OUR BEST MATE AND THE NICEST GIRL EVER ARE UNDERTHERE, WE HAVE TO HELP THEM!” Tom yelled, “THE AMBULENCE AND FIRE BRIGADE ARE ON THEIR WAY, THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET YOURSELF KILLED!” Max yelled back at him, crouching on the floor next to him holding him by the scruff of the neck. I looked to Nathan. He was still. Just waiting. There was no movement. “Nath- are you okay?” I asked but he didn’t reply. I touched hand, he felt really cold. “MAX,” I shouted “It’s Nathan, he feels really cold” Max looked at Nathan who was motionless. “Right, everyone put your coats around him. NOW!” Max shouted and we all did what he said.
Max POV
They had been under for at least 3 minutes now and a part of me knew the outcome. They weren’t going to make it. How could they? It was below freezing in there and I knew that they could only manage a maximum of 5 minutes in that water. The race against time was on, and it looked like time was winning.
